I dont think that would be good for windows 8, i believe windows 8 will supports 10 point touchscreens, this seems to be only a 2 point touchscreen.

this is one of the fully compatible monitors out right now, 10 point ips touchscreen: Amazon.com: Acer T232HL bmidz 23-Inch Touch Screen LCD Display: Computers & Accessories

Personally I would still wait awhile for prices to come down and let the manufactures work out some remaining kinks if they are any.

Also for price of close $500 you can almost but a tablet computer for that.

But if you are early adopter, cutting edge kind of guy and dont mind spending the $500, then go for it.

Hi, I already have a Nexus 7 tablet, but I want to be able to use my desktop PC with windows 8 nicely.
Not a chance I can spend 500$ on a screen though.

yeah, to be windows 8 touch, you need minimum 5 points of touch. that's why the acer has 10 points of touch (so that 2 people can use the monitor at once, like for a game).

there'll be more affordable models released as the windows 8 hardware starts to replace the windows 7 hardware.

now, with 2 points of touch, you can still do a lot of the gestures. I don't know the currency conversion, but if your monitor is a lot cheaper, maybe it's the way to go. But note that if you bought a new PC with Windows 8 (which means it came with the OEM System Builder version) or if you installed Windows 8 with the System Builder version rather than the upgrade version, that all touch features will be disabled for hardware that is not certified as Windows 8 compatible (due to the 5 point requirement). which means your touchscreen monitor becomes a regular monitor.

@dirtyvu..... It doesnt matter how many points of touch a touch screen has as long as the touch controller is HID Compatible which allows for "touch & Multi-Touch" features to be enabled in Win7/8.

I have a 1touch HID compatible touch screen which enables only "touch" but not multi-touch features. The more points of touch the more multi-touch features are enabled.

With just 1touch point I am able to point, click, drag and most importantly swipe the screen and makes Win8 metro/modern gui a much more enjoyable experience.

Windows 8 multitouch hardware requirements

System builder versions of Windows 8 require Windows 8-certified hardware to enable touch.

there are multiple threads on this topic where people's touch devices don't work with the system builder version of Windows 8 unless it has 5+ points of touch, which is the version you also get with a new Windows 8 PC (which of course has Windows 8 certified hardware with 5 points of touch).

here's one of the threads:

@dityvu.. Good info thx, but I am not sure what to tell U unless we are talking two different things. I have a 19" touch screen using a single touch controller which enables "touch" and allows the functions I mentioned above.

As a matter of fact, originally this same touch screen used a controller that was not HID compatible, was detected as a MOUSE only and did not enable Touch features. Since this basically behaved as a mouse pointer, I did some research and was able to purchase a new HID Touch Controller ( ebay $10 ) which upgraded my touch screen to said functions.

Lastly, this has all been verified in both win7 and Win8 final.

Again, if you have the retail upgrade version of Windows 8, you can use any touch device.

But if you have the system builder full version of Windows 8, you cannot use non-Windows 8 certified touch devices. That means the $100 and $140 packages of system builder Windows 8.

Again, this strategy (even if I think it's a little unfair) makes sense. People who use the retail upgrade version are upgrading currently owned hardware which is not Windows 8 certified. So it would make sense to allow them to use what they have.

The system builder version is the OEM version. This is the version that PC manufacturers use to install Windows 8. A PC manufacturer that sells a Windows 8 PC has to have certified Windows 8 hardware, including 5-point touch hardware. They cannot build a PC with hardware that does not certify as Windows 8 hardware and call it a Windows 8 PC. So let's say they build a PC with 2-point or 1-point touch hardware from the Windows 7 era, and try to install the OEM Windows 8. The touch will fail. As it should. Someone that buys a Windows 8 machine and tries to do a 5-point maneuver will fail on Windows 7 hardware and then think Windows 8 touch is crap.

No PC manufacturer will use Windows 8 Retail Upgrade to install Windows. For one thing, Microsoft would not allow it and even if they did, it would be very cumbersome to mass produce systems where you have to upgrade the OS.

Allowing the retail upgrade version of Windows to allow touch makes sense because people upgrading know they have old hardware and know that their hardware is already suboptimal and most likely are willing to deal with it until they can upgrade the hardware.

@Dirtyvu.. I agree with your logic, but I will just leave it at this for anyone that may find this info useful.

I have the full ver of win8 installed on a clean drive and I have been able to enable "touch" features by simply using an HID compatible 1point touch controller.

If you have the system builder version, I'm very surprised that your touchscreen is working. well, count yourself lucky! :D

I have deployed Win8 Pro and Enterprise to nearly a dozen devices in our school and touch has worked on all of them. None have 10 point input. All are Lenovo machines including x220 and x230 tablets with two point input, an x61 tablet with single input, and M-series desktops with two point touch. I've been deploying RTM since August without any problems (using MDT). I do agree that you'd be better off waiting a couple of months for touch screen monitors- the prices are going to drop dramatically as more manufacturers try to keep current and release more options. I'm waiting and hoping since I'll start upgrading our MultiPoints to 2012 as soon as the touch screens become affordable.
