    Windows 8 not using all 8 cores - FX-8120

I have an AMD FX-8120, it is an 8 core processor but Windows 8 seems to be only be recognizing 4 of them. Here is a screenshot from task manager

It does say Physical Processors 8, but as far as I am aware it should also say it has 8 cores.

    Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Keir

Based on the diagram I found of the architecture, Windows 8 is seeing it correctly (you will note that it does show eight logical processors):

If I'm understanding that correctly, they're clustering on the cores, so it makes sense for it to be presented to Windows as four physical cores with eight logical processors.

Just tried updating the BIOS, I think it failed but luckily I have one of those motherboards with Fail Safe, also I got MISSING BOOTMGR and when I went to repair it it thought I was on Windows 7. Might give it another try later.

So basically the 8 cores are merging into 4?

It's just the way the architecture is designed on these AMD chips. It's different than Intel does it and this is how Windows 8 will recognize it.

don't expect Windows to use all the cores of a CPU, you have to throw some real stuff, download a F@H client and you will see it will use 100 % of the CPU and all the cores, but Windows himself use only few resources

Windows 8.1 uses more than 2 cores? in Performance & Maintenance
Back in 2008/9 I had the Intel Q6600 cpu and at that time games and OS barely could utilize more than 2 cores of a processor. How are things now?
