For those that had issues with Intel WiDi - here's the FINAL ANSWER for Windows 8.

Intel has recently posted their Windows 8 WiDi info and drivers since launch:

Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) in general requires the Intel HD Graphics 15.28, Intel PROSet/Wireless 15.5 for your chipset plus the Intel My WiFi Technology 15.5 (a.k.a. MWT, or My WiFi Dashboard 15.5), plus the latest Intel Wireless Display 3.5 software. See the Intel WiDi System Requirements - all software can be obtained from the Intel Download Center.

Note: Certain versions go together as well, e.g. WiFi 15.1.1 and WiDi 3.0.13 on Win8 Preview, or the latest versions as listed on Intel Centrino WiFi Products (new) with Intel WiDi 3.5.40+ (OEM provided i.e. HP, Dell, Toshiba, etc., or latest version from Intel, in Latest Downloads section here).

Finally, there are Intel Win8 drivers for Intel PROSet/Wireless for WiFi, Bluetooth + High-Speed, and Intel WiFi/WiMAX; check the related download pages to determine which driver supports your Intel WiFi card. Also, some notebooks may require the Intel Centrino OEM drivers in order to work properly. The Intel Driver Update Utility can also be used to automatically detect and install wireless drivers and software.

More info can be obtained on the Intel Wireless Products and Windows 8 page or the Intel Wireless Display page at http://www.intel.com/go/wirelessdisplay

UPDATE: The latest updates from Intel employee rradi: Enabling Wireless Display (WiDi) on Windows 8 RTM (also see Comments pages).

Also note that Intel HD Graphics driver is now 15.28.8 (9.17.10.64.2875).

Not quite solved...I have a Dell XPS15 (L502X) which has the Centrino Advanced-N 6230.
There are no 15.5 drivers for this one yet, not on Dell's site and not on Intel's site. I tried installing the ones from a file called
wireless_15.5.6_e64.zip
It gave me no installation error, but the driver on the device manager shows v14.2.1.3 (after installing the ones from that zip file downloaded from Intel). Interestingly enough, if I run the online "Intel® Driver Update Utility" it says i have the latest and shows 15.5....which is strange..
With this driver, when i click on "scan for adapters on Widi" it goes directly No adapters detected...instantaneously..it doesnt even try to search. With the previous driver it at least searched...sometimes found but never connected (to a PTV2000).

Any ideas?

thanks!

Started at the Intel Wireless Products and Microsoft Windows 8 page, the scrolled to the bottom and selected Centrino Advanced-N 6230. Wait a couple seconds for the JavaScript to run, then a link to Intel PROSet/Wireless Bluetooth Software for Windows 8 will popup. That should be the correct driver for your system - file is (currently) BT_2.6.1210_e64.exe.

I have also noticed that the versions (after install) don't necessarily match the main version number. Also, there are several other required components as well, so make sure you have everything else listed in the first post above to make it work. I also have a PTV2000.

Other than that, reboots are key, so don't skip them. :)

Hi Alphastar,
These are the files I am installing (on a clean format of win8...formated drive and all). I install in this order

wireless_15.5.6_e64.zip
BT_2.6.1210_e64.exe
Intel_My_WiFi_Dashboard_15.5.6_e64.msi
WiDiSetup 3.5.40.0.exe

When installing these, it does not request a reboot at any time. I have rebooted after the first and again after the second file.

My PTV2000 was reset to defaults so it currently has the 2.xxxx firmware. I need to be able to connect to it to upgrade it.

Any other ideas to try?

thanks.

Selected the option for Manually Downloading the drivers for Centrino Advanced-N 6230. See this link.

IMO, I think the problem is wireless_15.5.6_e64.zip. According to above, your PROSet/Wireless should be 15.3.50 and not 15.5.6, however the My WiFi Dashboard should be 15.5.6 (don't ask).

You probably only need to uninstall the first, (reboot if asked), and install the second.

On the message does say Intel PROSet/Wireless 15.5
I tried 15.3.50 and had no luck with that either.

this is what it says on intel page
Intel® Wireless Display — Using Intel® Wireless Display with Microsoft Windows* 8
Intel® Wireless Display, or WiDi, requires minimum versions of drivers and software for use with Microsoft Windows* 8:
Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers version 15.5.5.47 or higher
Intel® HD Graphics Driver version 15.28 or higher
Intel® Wireless Display version 3.5 or higher

but the version offered for my 6230 is 15.3.50. This is why I looked for and found that wireless_15.5.6_e64.zip file and tried that (after trying the 15.3.50 which didnt work either).

My current setup is Centrino-N 1000 (5.3.50), Intel HD Graphics 3000 (HP SP58788*), Intel My WiFi Dashboard (15.5.6) and Intel WiDi (3.5.40) with PTV2000 (reset to 2.0, then updated with WiDi 3.5.40). Works for me. However, version numbers for the subcomponents don't exactly match up in Programs and Features.

Nothing else I can suggest for now; I will try later with an Ultimate-N 6300 (which is closer to your Advanced-N 6230) and post my results. I just tried with the Intel HD Graphics 15.28 driver (9.10.17.64.2867, which the Release Notes suggest) from Intel Download Center (hence the * above) and it says:

"Upgrade Needed"

"Intel WiDi requires that you upgrade your Intel graphics driver either from www.intel.com or your PC manufacturer's website."

thanks for the suggestions. I will try a format and reinstall from scratch but directly to intel drivers. Lets see how it goes.
Thanks.

I tried reformatting once again....once with the 15.5 and then reformatted and tried with the 15.3
no luck....i am pretty sure all my hardware is fine, so I guess its a question of time until they figure out whats wrong with the drivers.

My combo works for me. Sounds like WiDi thinks you don't have all of the prerequisites installed.

You might try uninstalling WiDi 3.5.40.0 and reinstalling, after you have the Graphics, WiFi, and Dashboard components installed (in that order).

Also, you could try reverting to WiFi/Dashboard 15.2.0.19 and WiDi 3.0.13 (a.k.a. Win8 workaround set)...and you will have to reset the PTV2000 to 2.0.

Sorry to hear that.

See this link for a workaround - maybe give it one last shot using that version of Intel WiDi (3.0.13). Or if you prefer, make a post on the Intel Support Communities or Intel WiDi-specific Community support site.

Finally, I read that Intel WiDi only supports (fully) the 15.28 HD Graphics driver (version 9.17.10.2867) which is what works for me with 3.5.40.0.

Thanks alphastar, I had seen the post...if you read the last page you will see rradi mentioning that the current drivers do not work on the 6230. He says ". If you try to install v15.5.6 on a system that uses an Advanced-N 6230 card, WiDi will not work correctly!"
I guess I just have to wait till the correct drivers are released. I have complained to Dell also, they say they are working on a solution.
thanks.
