DVD drive will only read CDRs, not DVDs

Hi folks. Another problem with my DVD drive here which I didn't have with Windows 7. As the title says my DVD drive will only read CDRs and not DVDs. My DVD drive is an Atapi iHAS122 . Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

    Regards
    Martin

Could be that the DVD laser itself has gone bad.

Thanks for the reply. It isn't that though as a few minutes before I installed Windows 8 from DVD. I had other DVD issues in the consumer preview and went back to Win 7 and all was ok again. Seems there's some bugs

I'm glad yours is working. I tried this last night and Command Prompt said it had 'completed successfully' so I rebooted but it didn't solve the problem. I'll try again tonight though.

I wonder what MS have done here? I thought the principle was that if things worked on Windows 7 they'd work on Windows 8 :/

Just for kicks, did you try other dvds you have laying around? my system have prob with one particular dvd rw that I know is brand new so there is some funkiness going on still.

All of the optical drives I've used since Windows 95 used the Microsoft drivers.

I wonder whether Vivid did a clean install of Win8 or an upgrade from Win7. A buggered registry suggests the latter.

Well check this Bob, I have two lappies, two Asus different series and specs. Both got fresh win 8 install and both showed the same symptoms which is weird dvd readings. Both can read DVDs now, however it is not all fluid as it should. I am confident this will be resolved .

It's working now . I plugged the SATA lead into a different slot, restarted and that didn't work, but then I put it in the original slot and it's ok - strange but I'm happy. I've had DVD drive problems both times I've installed Windows 8 to this PC - both clean installs too

Hello: Actually the title above doesn't due this problem justice. I have a 1.5 yr. old ASUS notebook which has been upgraded from the initial WIN8.0 to 8.1 and then to PRO several months ago. The PRO was done in an attempt to install the encryption technology, Bitlocker. Shortly after the...

I've tried googling and fixing this issue for 12+ hours. Here's the deal: whenever I open new programs, my hard drive jumps up to 100% usage. The problem is my read/write speed looks like it's capped around 10 MB/s. The manufacture says I should get an average of 156 MB/s. I have a 6 month...
