we are the only OS which doesn't have window drop shadows any more.

I really like the look from a small drop shadow, a windows with a drop shadow looks nice and is a bit easier to track visually for me. but maybe one get used to no shadows.

what do you think about it, I don't have a strong opinion about this and Im very curious what others think about it.

I think the 'new look' sucks like a black hole on steroids.

I can LIVE with the OS.

I just don't like LOOKING at it.

The eye-candy in the CP was just right, IMO....

    Borderline pathetic.
The desktop is a bland wasteland now. And yeah, one will get used to looking at it, but why should we? Thanks for the crap visual design work there Microsoft!

Actually I have a theory that they completely nerfed the desktop visuals in order to make Metro look nicer, thus causing you to breath a sigh of relief when the also-but-not-quite-as-bland metro screen came up, brainwashing you into actually liking it.

That's whats my real impression too but I was hopping that I'm over the top with my impression... The idea is good the result is really ugly. Not bad taste, just not finished. I hope adobe and some other essential programms (for me) are going to make their programs available on linux so I can switch.... but I guess that will never happen. I really don't like Apple as a company, even if I like their OS.

Sometimes I'm just I'm about to switch, but then my brain interrupts my rage storm before I could do something bad (buy a mac...)

I know how you feel. And I've been a Big MS Supporter for decades now.

I got 8 on my guest/test machine, I test out programs and such on it, but 8 at this point will not be my primary OS for a long time. And I have /never/ failed to update my main systems to the latest OS ever, not since DOS 2.0 have I ever skipped a release but Windows 8 may be the one. It needs a LOT of fixing, If in the end I can hack at 8 enough to make it behave like a proper desktop and I can verify all my printers, scanners, audio production software/hardware ect I'll switch, but it'll take months to get all that done with it NOT being my primary machine, Windows 9 may be out by then :)

I might be one of the few, but I like the simplicity and cleanness of the new look. But I'm sure custom visual styles will come to satisfy every taste.

As said, I like the idea from the clean and very simple design, but it's just finished with bad or without taste (imho). It doesn't look good or elegant in any way at the moment. I means it's funny that they had fundamental design changes in the last couple of month...

Fseal good to hear, thanks for you replay. :)
Totally undecided what I will do at the moment. It's not the problem not to have the newest stuff (even when I really like it because it's fun), the problem is that I don't have faith that it going to be better in the near future. I don't the a constant progress in windows, they don't shape thing better and better to perfection, too much half baked solutions. the even can't manage to make a solid backup solution since a couple of years (file history is a bad joke at it's development state)

Hello Password,

The Show shadows under windows setting is still available in Visual Effects.

How weird: the option is still there, in the visual effects:

But the "shadow" is only 1 pixel thick!!! (bug?) And you're right: it's like not even available.
They should decide to completely remove it or to fix it if it's for keeps.

@Shawn
I'm running the x64 RTM in VMware Player 5 with the Win8 additions installed (graphics enabled also) but as I said, I notice only a very thin almost noticeable shadow. Is this a fact or just a glitch in the VM?

Thanks
Hopachi

I don't even really notice it a whole bunch. In 7, it's dreadfully obvious. In 8, meh. I don't swing either way. I just like me my white windows and colored Taskbar. :D Looks VERY clean.

Then why is the shadow-option still available if the result is pointless? Just asking, as you said, I also didn't used it in a long while, I've noticed it today to try to give an answer on this thread, but I'm a bit puzzled by the result.

Hello Hopachi,

Yeah, it's barely noticable for me. You really almost have to have a white background with white window borders to even really notice the tiny thing. It's not like it was in Windows 7 at all.

I generally turned a lot of these things off in Win 7/WS 2k8 R2 anyway, so I really didn't notice too much. Personally, I like it, but I have always preferred very minimalist desktops, the only exception being KDE Plasma.
