Gadgets Gone - So is Windows 8

I just read an article stating that wonderful Microsoft had removed gadgets from Windows 8 RTM due to security issues.

If that holds true it will be the death knell for 8 for me. Apparently there will be yet another work around for those, like me, who love their gadgets. That on top of the fix for the start button, the fix for shutdown and restart, and who knows what else.

I have tested this new offering from mickeysoft semi-extensively and can see nothing that redeems it for the desktop, keyboard, mouse user like me. In the event that I purchase a non-apple tablet perhaps I will give it another look. Meanwhile this reminds me too much of Windows ME.

If you have multiple monitors, Gadgets are awesome. Maybe not so much with a single monitor, but I have a nice looking clock, stop watch, CPU/GPU and Network traffic monitors, calendar with Moon Phases (important for my astrophotography) and a great weather app. All visiable /always/ at a glance. Even when running fullscreen game apps and the like.

Other people have news and stock tickers etc.

They are really the forerunner (and still better in almost every way) of Metro's "Live Tiles".

    Gadgets: like little running apps.

It's interesting how people lived without them fine but can't live without them now.

    Hi there
Gadgets are fine if you want them -- I actually like a Stock ticker and have a BBC news item ticker -- these are unobtrusive on decent sized monitors and they don't stop you working with multiple windows open simultaneously either. You can hide them at will too which further increases the flexibility of the system.

These are really how metro should have been implemented -- then if you click the gadget you could get your "Metro like full screen" application. if you wanted it.

For some people the Metro idea might be fine with properly working "dynamically updating apps" but for others it's just a hopeless mess making it almost impossible for people to do their daily work.

Windows 8 has some decent features in it but unless I can get round having to remove about 497 tiles every time I try and install something complex like the Adobe CS5.5 master suite (Photoshop etc) and bring some of these back to the taskbar and desktop short cuts (just the main applications --about 7) I'm giving W8 a miss.

it's a LOT of work messing around with this stuff just to USE your computer -- finding out which are the actual MAIN applications, linking to the actual folder and then with a right mouse click sending it to the desktop as a short cut. Takes a lot of time too.

I'd be really surprised if W8 ever finds a place inside any sensible large corporation --why on earth Ms is releasing an "Enterprise" version just amazes me --the only "Enterprise" W8 might appear in is probably the original "Starship Enterprise" with Mr Spock having a go on his latest piece of Vulcan Technology.

    Cheers

I kept trying with 8. Other OSs in the past I started out hating and grew to love them once I learned how to navigate them. Same with some office apps.

For that reason I have installed it several times and worked to learn it. Every time it just seemed to get worse - with enough customization I could get it decent. Windows 7 needs no customization.

I really like my gadgets, in fact, I refuse to be without them.
Perhaps they do work in the 32 bit version of 8 RTM. I wouldn't know - I only use 64 bit.

I will still take a look at a final, non enterprise release but I am 98% sure that I will give it a miss.

    Hey Jimbo,

I'm completely mystified how MS thought that going with a flat "directory" in the menu system was a wise idea. This is the biggest design gaffe I've ever seen come out of MS. Well ... not the biggest ... MS Bob was worse and VS 2012 with it's monochrome front-end competes for worst looking DEV tool of all time, but you get my point.
