Thank you for posting this, but...

Is there a way to do this by copying files from an existing Windows 7 installation? Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I'd rather use my own files instead of a download from an unknown source.

Sorry this is an old thread.

I love the sidebar and gadgets on Vista and I wondered if they could be added to Windows 8.

There is a \Program Files\Windows Sidebar which is Hidden and System with no files in it. I downloaded the 2 files from the links phailyoor supplied.

I tried the files but they didn't work, the clock(s) only show fingers that are stuck at 12 o'clock, the CPU you can't read much as there is text across it. Now the weather gadget hasn't worked for a long time as M$ have disabled its operation. I did find one that works from Weather Vista Gadget 1.1.0.6 and its the only gadget that works on Windows 8.
