How to view desktop icons in list view?

I've been happily using Deskview.exe for all windows versions up to Windows 7, but for some reason this tool won't work on Win 8 anymore.
Is there anyway to view desktop icons in List view?

Probably not what you're looking for but,
you can list desktop icons in list view using file explorer > desktop

Running File Explorer and clicking the UP arrow until you reach the desktop.
Change view mode to list.

Yes, thanks, I use that currently by not using desktop, instead I have a folder on desktop and I put all my desktop items in there, but that's very tedious and also the purpose of desktop is to have important files right in front of you. I am really surprised they removed this functionality from 8 and 8.1.

Same thing in Apps list in Metro interface, can we make those icons smaller so we can get more than 10 icons in a column?
