Some of the program shortcuts are stored it:

    For Your Account Only:
    C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
For All User Accounts: (must be administrator)
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

That's where I go to rename what the tiles show on the metro start screen. You may be able to change the Icon's there and have it reflected on the Metro start screen. I haven't tried that myself. You'll have to show hidden files to find those folders.

That's right, you can change icons there, but you can only change the small programm icons(which are shown in metro screen in green big square-tiles) to another small programm icon(which is still shown small in the bottom left corner of the green square tiles)........not really metro style....

Yeah, OK, I see what you mean. Hopefully there will be some customization options for the metro screen. I'd be happy to be able to just rename things without having to dig down though the hidden files and folders.

It is probably possible: The colour, name, and the whole "shape" of the App Tile is in hidden folder in c:\Program files\Windows Apps.
The problem is: most of the time, when I try to mess with it, it reacts in a weird way. Sometimes it just won't react (probably I need to ... refresh the Menu Start or something, or when it finally reacts on what I want to do, it becomes 'broken')

Probably it's because I don't have enough skill to do it, or you can't change anything unless you don't recompile the whole thing.

I've seen that delay too when I've edited shortcuts in the two folders I listed above. I just log off and back on or reboot.

I'm afraid that editing shortcuts from "classic", x86 programs is a different thing from fiddling with Metro Apps.

Yes I know, I'm just saying I've seen that delay between when I edit it, and the metro start menu finally catches up.

Yeah, I know. I'm just saying, that whole Desktop logic doesn't imply to Metro. I tried to restart my computer (or relog user) and changes don't really catch up. Just... suddenly app shows that small X, meaning that something is broken. ;/

    EDIT:
After some time of … waiting and doing stuff I managed to finally see the results of my lame modyfications:

However, as I predicted the application is "broken":

Dunno how it really works. Maybe it is like in iOS, the app need to have some certificates or something. Anyone codes Metro Apps?

This is only possible for new Windows 8 Apps, not for Programm shortcuts, and the second one are the ugly ones.....

I actually have no beef with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus.
