I think the overall point here is, is it really necessary to remove the start menu for users that have a PC or prefer that interface. All they have to do is make the Metro UI optional and all these discussion become moot.

Basically you can do that yourself easy enough, just use vistart.exe, and stay on the desktop.

You should not have to use a 3rd party app. The functionality should be left in windows so the user can choose. It was there in the developer preview, they should have just maintained it.

I agree with you, but Microsoft wants to discontinue the start button in it's entirety.

Hey guys, don't you think that we have a small offtopic here?

I just wanted to ask someone if it's possible to customize Start Menu beyond what MS (and others) gave us allready. Maybe someone, who is "playing" with W8 files or registry will know the answer. Maybe the whole thing is blocked. Maybe changing tile background is like wanting to change the basic look of a whole app. It's not like PPM->Properties->Change icon (like it is in Aero) and it will never be.

The functionality you are suggesting in the mock up does not exist and knowing MS probably won't. They have never truly been into allowing really good customization. You might see something from a 3rd party down the road but other than some minor tweaks here and there the UI is pretty much how it is going to be. Hence the expanded discussion within this thread.

is there a way that you could mass remove everything from the metro ui startmenu and then readd them back haveing them in the goups that they appear on the all apps tab back on to the start menu in the catagories, this would help automate software deployment on the client side,

basicly when you are deploying applications via.... icons on the metro start may become unsorted and hard to find, so i was wondering that if you could have 1 script that mass removes all the icons. then have one that puts all the icons back on to the start menu as how they look on the all apps tab.

I think customization of the tiles is a must. New Windows 8 Apps which have tiles similar to the preinstalled Apps looks fine, but normal programm icons look terrible. If it is not possible to change those small old icons, than the whole metro look is destroyed......
