Old Task Manager is part of Windows 8

I tried to run a custom Windows 7 theme on Windows 8. The particular theme needs the system files to be patched, and I had not done so yet. I ran the theme anyway, just to see what would happen.

It wasn't good at all. I could not open any Explorer windows whatsoever, right click on the desktop had an empty menu with no choices and I had to pull some stunts to get things to be well again.

Anyhow, here is a screenshot from when it was messed up. I couldn't even save the screenshot at all because of Explorer being messed up. I made the screenshot then saved after I fixed things:

Yes, I used the original task manager in my pe builds - simply renaming or removing the new TM thing brings up the original.

What exactly is a pe build? What is it useful for? I honestly don't even know the first thing about it, but see you and others mention it from time to time...cool.

It is a miniature version of windows that you can make.

PE stands for pre installation environment - that is what you get in boot.wim on the dvd - that too is a mini version of the o/s - it only contains windows setup program ( and the recovery options ) - therefore it is called PE.

If you make something yourself - you create a small version of windows in a folder - put in any functions/programs you like ( typically - your partition manager, disk imaging program, data recovery program, antivirus, etc ).

You then capture the folder as a bootable .wim file.

You can boot it into ram off the hard drive - or off external media like dvd or usb.

Perform any partitioning/image restore, etc all from one dvd/usb drive.

If you want to get fancy, you can put in windows explorer, sound, flash, browser, wireless connection - anything you like, really.

Here is one I made from Win8 cp ( that is pe 4 ) :

    A couple from win7 SP1 pe ( that is pe 3.1 ) :
