Cannot pin anything to my taskbar

Hey there, so since about August I have not been able to pin anything to my taskbar. I've tried all the methods there is (right click on application & pin to taskbar, snap to taskbar, search app & pin, etc.) yet nothing works. If I try to pin it to taskbar, the right-click menu changes from "Pin to taskbar" to "Unpin from taskbar", which implies it worked, but it hasn't actually been pinned.

Some screenshots using Steam as an example:

    Pinning to taskbar:

    Menu now says "Unpin":

    But it's not there....

Can anyone help me with this?

    Hello Snaptic,

You might see if resetting and clearing pinned items on your taskbar using the tutorial below may be able to help allow it to work afterwards. This will remove your currently pinned items, so you'll need to re-pin them afterwards.

    Hope this helps for now,

As a test, pin something to your taskbar as usual, then restart explorer to see if it shows up on your taskbar. This is to test and see if it may just be an issue with the taskbar not refreshing to show them.

Since this would be to long a go to be able to do a quick system restore back to when it was working, let's create a new user account and see if it works fine while you are signed in to it.

Is your current account a Microsoft account or a local account?

    Its a Microsoft Account.

EDIT: Just made a new local account and tested it out, but it doesn't work there either.

That's what I was afraid of.

If you like, you could see if what David posted may work for now as a workaround to pin items to the taskbar.

Otherwise, you may need to refresh Windows.

That's what I was afraid of...it means I'll need to get a hold of Microsoft support because I don't have a physical copy of Windows 8.1 anywhere :/
