Show/hide desktop icons with a button or shortcut. Is there a way of doing this in Win8.1?

Thanks David. I now have it installed. It shows the desktop items for timed period 3-100 secs. You can show icons with mouse clicks or [Win + D] or moving cursor across desktop if you configure it so. Odd that you can't hide the icons with a mouse click.

Try setting it for middle wheel or left or right button.
I looked at it a bit.
It might get some getting used to.

I've set it to middle button although the right button is greyed out and is permanently set. But these are all for "showing" the icons. I've set the timer for a few seconds and that seems adequate. If nobody else comes up with a better idea I'll probably stick with this tweak. Thanks.

Hope it works out good for you.
Somebody may come up with a better solution.
Thanks for the rep.
Check yours. +10 :)
