So I wanted to change my desktop wallpaper but then my Personalize window won't open. Same goes with Screen resolution.

Untitled.jpg

When I right click on my desktop and click Personalize or Screen resolution option, a message pops up that says this..

Untitled2.png

I think my files are corrupted. Your help would be much appreciated.

Hello Boey, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Let's start with using OPTION TWO in both of the tutorials below to add "Screen resolution" and "Personalize" to your desktop context menu. These will also restore the default registry entries for these two items that will hopefully sort this for you.

Screen Resolution - Add or Remove from Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

Personalize - Add or Remove from Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

If not, then you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to undo and fix it.

Hope this helps for now, :)
Shawn

Would run System File Checker scan will make Windows replace corrupt or missing system files on your computer.

In a elevated Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter: sfc /scannow

Should take about 5-10 min. to run.

@Brink
Thanks for your reply! But I'm afraid the registry thingy didn't work. Same message appears.

@jds63
I tried that but it says it cannot start the repair service.

I originally just wanted to Reset my laptop but I guess my files are too corrupted and I cannot use the Reset or Refresh feature of w8.

Open the services at run type services.msc and make sure that the service "Windows module Installer" is running. This service is required to run sfc.

Try to run chkdsk first, then try sfc again. At a elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /f /r

Well I think that disk check ruined it more, I can't event save screen shots now. :(

And whenever I click on system restore, an error pops up that says..
[System Restore]
The disk Local Disk (C:) has errors.
Windows has detected file system corruption on Local Disk (C:). You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.

Can't think that chkdsk would ruin a drive. I would just do a Windows 8.1 refresh. If that does not work try reset, but will loose all that was put on after install of Windows 8.1.

Just follow the tutorial. Seems have no choice now.

Your Welcome. As said i believed now this was your only option, to reset. Glad your resolved, any further issue, come back to thread.

Once you know all is working well, make a system restore point, do not wait too long.
Try SFC again also when you get a chance.
