Less customization = Less resources used = Faster OS. Yes?

I know you don't like the look, but if I could only show you how much faster 8 is on my machine you'd probably crap your pants. I know I could build a rig like Art is doing so that 7 would run faster, but I see no need to now. I'd rather spend my money on something else like a Surface Pro.

    Windows 8.1 'Ultimate' RTM 64 bit (Pro/WMC).

More playing around, and mine is starting to be quite useable. Not as nice as some I've seen here, but a lot better than 'stock'.
Now if only I could show my tiles as icons.......and change the text colour. Ah well, more playing about.

This directly relates to why I don't like running all of this third party stuff to customize. I prefer to keep my machines as clean as possible.

I'm happy you are seeing so much better performance. Aside from what "appears" to be a wickedly fast boot, I haven't noticed this radical performance improvement. I've run Windows 8 on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 with 4GB of RAM, and my primary Windows 8 host at work is a lowly Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM. Aside from the bootup, with a clean install of 7 or a clean install of 8, performance is equivalent on both machines from my testing.

With respect to the fast boot, while my core 2 duo appears to boot from a standard hard drive in about 12 seconds, if I actually jump on right away and try to begin working...I can see immediately that it's not done loading yet. Give it another 20 seconds and it's ready to go. So, that's 32 seconds. Roughly on par with the time it takes Windows 7 to boot and become usable to the same level.

I will say Windows 8 is certainly not slower in any respect that 7....it is a quick OS. I just think many compare their old bloated Windows 7 installs that have been running for quite a while with a bunch of stuff installed, to their brand new clean Windows 8 and are being a bit mislead as to where the speed improvements are coming from.

A Start Screen on a laptop I'm working on. Stardock has done it again! The latest Decor8 puts the time on Start.

I do like having the time on the start screen (I had a app that puts the time in a tile, but it was sort of unreliable), but i don't need any of the other features and $5 is too much for me. I found Ze Clock which is reliable, but design needs tweaking

As for customization I do have IObit's Start menu 8 installed, but I barely use it. it's faster to just hit the windows key and start searching (though Menu 8 does override the menu key in desktop, but that's usually fine)
