New guy here with new windows 8 on new HP laptop the wife got me for my birthday and christmas present. How can I get my desktop to be like this photo below so that when the computer boots it goes directly to this and not the tabs/icon stuff? Also it would help so be able to turn the computer off instead of going thru like 5 different things before I find the power off icon. lol Im kinda old school and like the simpler things and not all this fancy stuff.

I don't use Metro -- I enable Classic Shell which boots me straight to my desktop bypassing Metro start screen (also gives me the Classic Start menu back again too) !!. Classic shell enables you to bypass Metro if you want to skip the Metro start screen and go straight to the desktop.

Here's mine on a Sony VAIO running W8 Release Preview. Using the "Futuristic Fractals" theme from W7 -- works fine on W8 too.

    Cheers

Is there a way, with OblyTile to make a transparent background? I want to convert some of my old dock icons into metro icons, but most of them are not square.

I needed this as well but had to modify the icons myself using GIMP. Seems that OblyTile is unable to make the background transparent (at least not with the 0.8.8 currently).
You'll need to edit the pic's in GIMP or Photoshop and make them transparent save as PNG.

Then OblyTile will be able to use the transparency.

I use GIMP because it's free and the option is pretty easy for metro icons:

Open the icon -> go to the menu -> colors -> color to alpha -> pick the color (from background) you want to remove and apply.

Hope you know what I'm talking about here.

Yeah, thanks for the reply... I know what you mean and I can do that. I was just hoping to save some time. Does anyone know a good source for premade icons? I found a few on DeviantArt, but they are pretty basic apps... nothing too obscure. I put together a pretty big set of icons back when I was using Stardock, and now I feel like I'm starting over.

I attached a few of my icons zipped.
    Hope you like them.

    They unzip to around 11MBs.
Virus free. Scan the zip file if you wish.

EDIT-- You can use IrfanView to make .ico files...............

Thanks... I appreciate it. I'm actually looking for metro style png's.

*edit* I just found these... looks like quite a few to pick from. metro style PNG?ICO?ICNS Icons search and download_easyicon.cn

There are some nice ones with transparent backgrounds, but it looks like there is no way to make a transparent background in Oblytile... even if your png has no background, Oblytile still wants to make a colored background.
