Hi. I have a new acer inspire that has windows 8 on it. It has been driving my insane and making me very stressed just trying to fit windows 8 to work on a PC platform, I've considered returning it but I am in need of a computer for my studies and I don't know if I will get a full refund. I have read this http://www.eightforums.com/customization/13511-can-you-disable-charm-bar.html

I also have installed Classic Shell which is great. I just cannot stop the "charms bar" from appearing when I accidentally touch the touch/clickpad from right to left, which happens all the time when I use the clickpad for scrolling-I hope you can imagine the extreme annoyance this has caused.

Here is an image of my clickpad software-it is Synaptics and it doesn't seem to have the options that some others do to disable things like gestures. I have toyed and experimented with it for hours.
Untitled.png

I've also tried upgrading to windows 8.1 but that gives me a "power state failure" and says windows 8.1 failed to install, this is a 2 day old laptop. I don't know what to do. If I can at least find a way to stop this "charm bar" from appearing, I can deal with this computer and get back to my life...thanks for your help!

I'd describe it as very annoying to say the least. For me its a setting in the ASUS Smart Gestures Utility. I can turn that one gesture off. I turn more than one off but at least its not an all or nothing deal, which seems to be the case for some laptop brands.

Hello Theridon, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Do you have the latest 17.0.19 Synaptics driver installed? If not, it may add it for you.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/20992-touchpad-edge-swipes-enable-disable-windows-8-a.html

Hope this helps for now, :)
Shawn

My laptop has a clickpad and it's a bit different, unfortunately it doesn't give me any swipe options. Good new though I fixed it with a registry edit: Disable swipe on synaptics touchpad in Windows 8 - Shawn Cicoria - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

It no longer appears!

Now just one problem at least for now...it's that typing disables my mouse when I press a key. I have toyed around with my Synaptics Clickpad settings and I have made the delay minimal, but it still happens that typing interferes with the clickpad movement which is incredibly frustrating during gaming. I wish synaptics wouldn't make such simple things so damn hard.....

EDIT: Somehow my computer let me update to windows 8.1 now. So I tried this http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/38356-precision-touchpad-turn-off-windows-8-1-a.html

But unfortunately it hasn't done anything. I know it's this darn "smartsense" thing, but even if I set it off, it's still messing with me, I can't type and move the pointer at the exact same time.

For what it's worth, you can disable the charms bar in Taskbar Properties/Navigation tab:

screenshot_62.jpg

Uncheck the option in the red box.

Uncheck the option in the red box.

That doesn't disable it completely, it just disables the top right hot corner. I have that option unchecked and moussing to the lower right corner still brings up the charms bar. I do believe the edge swipe is still enabled too. I'll have a look at it latter on, on my laptop to confirm. It was a good try though.

See if you may have the setting in Option One of the tutorial below to set to "No delay" for this. :)

Maybe this setting in Classic Shell is what you need:

You can still get the Charms bar by pressing Windows key+C.

I tested it myself.

Irritating, isn't it. The Synaptics here has the 'Enable Edge Swipes' that can be unchecked, check to see if there is some newer Synaptics driver version available for your pc? Or maybe this is can be useful: WinAero: Winaero Charms Bar Killer (am recommending a backup or create a restore point before testing software).

CharmsBarKiller works fine for me on the desktop but I'm not sure if there would be other issues with a portable device.

As a side note: With the additional features in '8.1 Update', I don't see much use for the Charms Bar anymore; enlighten me if I'm mistaken! :)

It depends on what your doing. The options shown in the charms bar depend on where you open it from. If you launch a Metro App and then open the Charms Bar from that App, the settings etc shown are for that App. Open the Start Menu and launch it from there and you get different options than if you launched it from say your Desktop. It changes depending on what your doing. Having said that though, I don't find myself opening it very often. It's usually when I'm trying to help someone figure something out in a thread, versuss actually changing a setting on my PC.
