Customization to make desktop look unique

I'd like to have a neat looking desktop, something like rainmeter does (I could never get that to work properly on windows 7). Could someone let me know of some customization tools and maybe a small tutorial how to do it?

Rainmeter is low-resource using, compatible with Windows 8.1, has many varied skins to use on your desktop, and is FREE. Good support in the forum and overall, I recommend it. Check out the following for a lookat what can be done with Rainmeter:
