STEPS TO RESTORE BUBBLES SCREEN SAVER TO FLOAT
OVER DESKTOP BACKGROUND in WINDOWS 8.1 PRO

Part 1 - Make Desktop Shortcut to Bubbles.scr

1. Place Bubbles screen saver as a shortcut on your desktop. Here is the path to it, all one line:

C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-bubbles_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_031e0ac2e58b36bb\Bubbles.scr

2. 12/16/2014 contributed by Shraams, pg 6: Be sure to rename your shortcut on the desktop Bubbles, not the default Bubbles - Shortcut.

Part 2 - Make Visual Basic Script to start shortcut.

1. Copy the following lines into notepad:

Set OWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
OWS.Run "C:\Users\[your profile name]\Desktop\Bubbles.lnk"

2. Substitute your profile name without the brackets.
3. Save as Bubbles.vbs in a directory of your choice.

Part 3 - Start Bubbles Shortcut in Task Scheduler

1. Open Task Scheduler Settings. (It helps to send it to your desktop as a working shortcut.)
Here is the path to it:

C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_taskschedulersettings\tasksched.msc

2. Just highlight the TaskScheduler Library (do not choose any subdirectories).
3. At top menu, open Create Task.

4. At General Tab: Name your task: Bubbles
5. Describe it: Let bubbles screen saver float over desktop.
6. Put dot in: Run only when user is logged on.
7. Configure for: Windows 8.1
(Do not hit OK just yet, there is more to do.)

8. At Actions Tab, hit New...
9. Specify task: Start a Program.
10. Program/script: WScript.exe
11. Arguments: "C:\[path to your directory of choice without the brackets]\Bubbles.vbs"
12. Hit OK to save.

13. At Triggers Tab, hit New...
14. Begin the task: On idle (dropdown list).
15. Place a checkmark in: Enabled
16. Hit OK to save.

17. * * * At Conditions Tab: place a check mark in Start the task only if the computer is idle for: 1 minute
1
8. Wait for idle for: 1 minute * * * <-- 10/08/2014 corrected to: Do NOT place checkmark, leave boxes blank.
Please see my posts at bottom of page and on page 2.

19. At Settings Tab: place a check mark in: Allow task to be run on demand.
20. Place a check mark in: Stop the task if it runs longer than: 3 days.
21. Place a check mark in: If the running task does not end when requested, force it to stop.
22. Leave drop down as: Do not start a new instance.
23. Hit OK to save it all and to list it in the Task Scheduler Library.

Part 4 - Test Task for Errors

24. Test it. Highlight your new task Bubbles in the library list.
25. At the lower right hand pane, hit Run. The bubbles should start floating right away.
26. End the test, hit End.
27. At Pop up window: Do you want to end all instances of this test? Hit Yes.

10/06/2014 Notes: Gabe55 contributed a solution for those of you who get an error messge, "cannot find file specified". He says to point the .vbs script to the actual location of the Bubbles.scr on your machine. See his entries at the bottom of page 3 and top of page 4.

12/14/2014: On Page 5, Predatorr has contributed a solution for those of you who may have trouble using the shortcut on the desktop. It is in Italian, but the code is there.

That's it, task is ready to go and you have your Bubbles back as always.
Note: It takes about 4 minutes of idle for Task Scheduler to start Bubbles.
Don't worry if you sit there and wait, they will appear.

You did a good job getting the bubbles to work.

Could you do it with all the screensavers or just bubbles ?

Re: Can It Work With Other Screen Savers as Well?

Thank you for the compliment. Yes, I don't see why not. I've never tried it, but this is my best guess:

First, send the screen saver to your desktop as a shortcut. If necessary, use search to find the file, and show the file location. Second make a new .vbs script with the new screen saver [name].lnk in the path. You can then open Task Schedular, highlight Task Scheduler Library, and disable Bubbles (Hit disable in the right hand panel) for future use. Then make a new Task, following the steps above.

Or, to save time and effort, just edit the existing Bubbles task like this:

1. Open Task Scheduler, highlight Task Scheduler Library.
2. Highlight your task, Bubbles. (It doesn't matter if you keep the task name Bubbles, but you can change it at the General Tab later if you wish.)
3. On the right hand panel, hit Properties.
4. The Task Properties window will open.
5. At Actions tab, hit Edit...
6. Change the Argument path to point to your new .vbs script.
7. Hit OK to save.

Good luck. Hope it turns out well for you.

I keep receiving the error that "the system cannot find the file specified." The path is correctly entered in the Argument. I tried it with and without adding the file type (.vbs) to the end of Bubbles, since the file type is not shown in the title or the path when I look it up, but neither have worked. When I double click the shortcut to the screen saver on my desktop, it works but.. I don't understand what the problem is, how to activate it when I'm idle. I'm running Windows 8, don't know if that makes any difference. No one else seems to be having any problems.

Something Has Happened

Hi Shraams,

Something happened lately. My bubbles doesn't work anymore from the Task Scheduler on idle either. It simply stopped. I had not changed anything. The only thing left was to for now is send Bubbles.scr to the desktop as a screen saver and manually start it.

The path to it in Windows 8.1 Pro is C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-bubbles_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_031e0ac2e58b36bb\Bubbles.scr . Or you can do a search on your system for Bubbles.scr.

I will keep looking for a solution, and if I find it, I will post the answer here.

I had that issue as well. I fixed it by going into the Notepad file and fixing

Set OWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
OWS.Run "C:\Users\[your profile name]\Desktop\Bubbles.lnk"

to
Set OWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
OWS.Run "C:\Users\[your profile name]\Desktop\Bubbles.scr"

compilation error 800A0401

Thanks for your contribution. I tried the revised script:

OWS = Create Object("WScript.Shell")
OWS.Run "C:\Users\[myusername]\Desktop\Bubbles.scr"

It generates a pop-up box about compilation error 800A0401 - unexpected end of statement. I thought: just plant a copy of Bubbles.scr on the desktop, maybe it is not finding the path. Bubbles.scr runs on click from desktop, but not from this .vbs. .

I went back to my old script again:

Set OWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
OWS.Run "C:\Users\[my user name]\Desktop\Bubbles.lnk"

It runs on click from the desktop and from the Task Manager test of the .vbs too. But it does not kick in on idle, even marked as Highest Priority.
I suspect it has something to do with the way I set Idle Conditions and have looked into that online, but it's very complicated.
I will have to keep trying.

Got It Working Again

Using my old script, above, at the Conditions Settings Tab, uncheck the boxes by "Start the task only if computer ceases to be idle." This correction has been added to the original instructions above. I don't know why this worked. Just glad it does. Hope it works for you all as well.

Customize Your Bubbles

source: Bubbles Screen Saver - Change Settings - Windows 7 Help Forums

Here's a nice link that tells how to customize your bubbles in the Windows registry. (Just in case, before you begin, export your registry to a file, so you can import it back if there's a problem.) Every command works in Windows 8.1 except the "Show Bubbles". It would have been so easy to have this quick fix, simply add that DWORD command, set it to value 1 to float the bubbles over the desktop. But it just reverted to floating them over a plain background. No difference from the Windows 8.1 Bubbles Screen Saver. So I stayed with the .vbs method.

I tried some changes. The image below shows the difference. I got less bubbles on the screen, made them larger, clearer, and slowed their pace down to languid, gentle bumps. Note: if you see only one bubble with no color, it means not enough zeros. Count and correct the number of zeros.

new DWORD Radius: 1123000000
new DWORD ShowShadows: 0
new DWORD Sphere Density: 1058000000
new DWORD TurbulenceForce: 1120000000

The nice part is, you don't have to restart the PC after each change to the registry. or even close it to see changes. Just start Bubbles from your desktop shortcut.

Have fun and experiment!MyBubbles3.png

Hi Gabe

Thank you for your input. I wonder, can you please check for me the full path to bubbles.scr and post it here? I am running windows 8.1 pro, and the path may be different for windows 8.

Hi Gabe

Thank you for your input. I wonder, can you please check for me the full path to bubbles.scr and post it here? I am running windows 8.1 pro, and the path may be different for windows 8.

Sonya
Here, I have kept it in the desktop - C:\Users\15R inspiron\Desktop\Bubbles.scr

Btw, I'm running windows 8.1.

Great, we're on the same system. BTW nice screenshot, very helpful. Let's try these steps:

1. Please locate Windows' bubbles.scr:

C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-bubbles_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_031e0ac2e58b36bb\Bubbles.scr

and send it to the desktop as a shortcut. (Delete old shortcut) Test the new shortcut. Does it work?

2. At C:\ rename your script Bubbles.vbs

3. Check the content of your C:\Bubbles.vbs Does it look just like this, only user your name is there, not mine?

Set OWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
OWS.Run "C:\Users\Chums.Acerberry\Desktop\Bubbles.lnk"

4. Next, in your Task Manager, highlight your bubbles task, and on the lower right sidebar, select properties.

5. When the properties window pops up, select the Actions tab.

5. At the Actions window, highlight Start A Program and click Edit...

6. In the Add arguments (optional): box, be sure you have the path to C:\Bubbles.vbs enclosed in quotes, like this: "C:\Bubbles.vbs" Leave the Start in (optional): box blank. Your Program/script: box should have WScript.exe without quotes.
7. Click OK to save and close the Actions tab.

8. Next, click on the Triggers tab. It should say On Idle. Highlight that and click Edit...

9. Make sure on the Advanced settings portion all boxes are unchecked. Then put a check in Enabled.

10. Click OK to save and OK to close the Properties box.

11. Highlight your Bubbles task again and hit Run in the lower right sidebar to test.

12. If the bubbles float and you are satisfied, shake the mouse and hit End in the lower right sidebar. Say yes to End all instances of the task, and get out of Task Manager.

Let me know if this works for you.

Sonya

Hope this helps, keep me posted.

I'll try to post screenshots as much as possible if that doesn't matter. I don't want to type much(Lazy Guy, I know). :sleepy:
I tried using the .lnk shortcut and also by copying the bubbles screensaver file(Bubbles.scr) in the desktop but none worked. And I have put the Bubbles.vbs file in C:\[here].
Note: I'm now trying with the Bubbles.scr file in the desktop.
