The old methods of bypassing the Metro UI do not work with Win8 Consumer Preview. I have found only a couple of links that are either unusable or unintelligible. If you find a way to jump directly from the Longn screen to the desktop, could you post it here? I am tired of trying to tweak the registry or to get a startup program to run the desktop...

Heh, thanks! There are a lot of people out there looking the same thing. I don't mind Metro but it is this closed system that reminds me of Yahoo opening webpage BITD. Y'know, Yahoo would put the news, the weather, business all in these neat packages that I could change around if I wanted to (but I never bothered). It is a narrow, one size fits all app that is so restricted. Not for me...

I agree that the hacks for doing this are a bit of a stretch and don't seem very reliable.

What we need is a good .exe file that will do this with a single click rather than having to jump through hoops with the registry.

Hopefully when windows 8 full version is released they give you the option. Sort of like during HPs webOS period when you would boot a new HP laptop it asked you if you wanted to try web os, it should prompt if you want the windows 8 metro UI or classic start menu.

well, I got something to WORK but all it does is use a desktop shortcut that I put in the Startup folder for Windows. The metro UI sits around for a long while then the Desktop magically appears. Hel'a'lot faster to just press the desktop icon In Metro!

Bypass Windows 8 Start Screen On Startup & Jump Directly To Desktop

C:\Users\<User Profile>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Now, select Shortcut option from New right-click context menu and enter the following Show Desktop shortcut command.
C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{3080F90D-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257}

I didn't post it in this thread because in your 1st post you said

I am tired of trying to tweak the registry or to get a startup program to run the desktop

I assumed that applied to that method ;)

select Shortcut option from New right-click context menu and enter the following Show Desktop shortcut command.
C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{3080F90D-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257}
Or search in Windows Explorer for "shows desktop".

Copy the found link to:
C:\Users\<User Profile>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Or - for all users - copy to:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

I.ve tried it out. On my setup, it is actually quicker to log in to Metro and select the desktop icon.

    Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
Dave, Yep, faster to hit the desktop icon BUT turns out that there is no speed advantage in doing so. The desktop shortcut trick kicks in AFTER most of all the desktop programs, excuse me, APPS, are up and running. That means you are ready to go once the desktop screen shows up. That is all the delay is.
