    Desktop background options greyed out

I recently used an optimising program - BoostSpeed - on my system and now find that it's stopped my desktop background slide show and the options are all greyed-out. I've posted a query on the BoostSpeed tech support but 4 days later, still no reply.

I've now binned the prog but need to know how to un-grey-out these options, to get back my background slideshow - any ideas?

Hello Tallon, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The easiest way would be to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened to undo it.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Yes, good point, but I'm reluctant to do that since it will also undo all the other (good) things it did - there must be some way of over-riding the grey-out...

It'll be hard to narrow down without knowing exactly what the setting was in BoostSpeed, and what it may have set in the registry.

If you like, go ahead and post a screenshot show what you're seeing to see if it may help to ID the culprit.

I'm afraid I've no idea what the setting was in BoostSpeed - ie, it doesn't tell you what it's doing, it just does them (another reason I don't like it) and there's no way to query or see what's it's done.

There must be a way to change the dersktop settings in Windows 8 that can over-ride whatever it's done, surely?

It'll just be a wild guessing game without knowing what that program set. It would be much easier to do a system restore with a restore point, and set anything back that you wanted again.

For now, you could check to see if OPTION TWO in the tutorial below may have been used. If so, then using step 5 should undo it.
