Hello Josh,

Yeah, I find that Windows 8 adds that black to larger transparent icons like that for some reason. Transparent icons work best with smaller sized (16x16) .ico files instead. If you like, I uploaded a transparent 16x16 .ico file in a ZIP below that you might see how it works for you instead.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

It seemed like it was working, but after restarting my pc it turned black again Screenshot by Lightshot
I'm starting to think it might not be fixable.
Thanks :)

Hmm, ok.

As a test, change the icon of the shortcut to use one of the blank icons in shell32.dll to see how it works.

This is a weird issue but I never tried full transparent icons.

Maybe something guarantees visibility, if icons are not allowed to be fully transparent...

Try this one too: one icon treated as normal, containing 256x256-32bit, 64x64-32bit, 48x48 ->32x32 -> 16x16-32bit+8bit+4bit layers just like a normal icon in Vista/7/8.

Good job Bulldog7.

Screenshot is different than the actual icon. Running Autoruns will refresh all icons, give that a try after a restart.
I was still thinking, maybe something in Windows prevents us from using a 100% transparent icon?
But black text on black background is allowed though...

@Josh

If you want to customize a folder and make it transparent. That's the blank icon

What you see is not what you get....its what you want i guess. :)

Customize any folder of your choice and browse to the blank icon.

Go ahead and try it and see the difference.

Hi there. First post on the site so here goes. Like the handle says I'm a tweak freak and I hate "helper programs" that can do all sorts of crap besides what a guy wants done. I've hated them stupid shortcut arrows for years and found this just today so it might help. The file includes an icon that is completely invisible. It worked flawless for me. Hope it helps.
