    Creation of custom keyboard layouts

Are there any tools for this, specific to Windows 8?

Preferably not language-specific, but since Microsoft is so keen to preserve the dominance of english in the world of computers...

The options for input are in Languages in control panel.

Check to see if you can choose from the available options.

Thanks. I had already come across this tool but I saw it only had up to Windows 7 support and didn't bother to try it. Got the job done, albeit at the cost of bringing me on the brink of a nervous breakdown due to its extremely finicky operation. Customization was never Microsoft's strong point.

Word of advice to anyone using this tool:
Choose your save paths-layout properties-whatnot carefully, don't save anything you haven't thoroughly tested from inside the program. Whatever you do, don't delete any installation files for layouts you create, because there is no automatic option for deleting unwanted/botched layouts from within Windows and manually removing their traces from the registry is a nightmare.

    Glad you fixed it.
    Thanks for the advice.

Usually a program compatible with 7 is compatible with 8 as well.

The easiest solution I have found for custom keyboard layouts on Win 8.1 is to use the Microsoft keyboard layout Creator 1.4 on another computer with an earlier operating system. Windows xp worked for me.

After 5 hours of fiddling I came to the conclusion that Win 8.1 is incapable of building the appropriate files using the aforementioned software. It will allow you to load and modify keyboards but not save them.

On the older computer Run the software and load an existing keyboard. Modify it to suit your needs. Under the projects tab, click the build function and save the files to a usb stick.

Download and install Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4 on your Windows 8.1 computer and then run setup from the saved files on your usb stick.

It will load your customised keyboard straight to your keyboard toolbar at the bottom right of your screen. If you are using an earlier operating system than XP or Vista you may have to download and install version 1.3
