How Can I Force Snipping Tool in Win8 to act like Vista/7?

How Can I Force Snipping Tool in Win8 to act like Vista/7?

Snipping Tool on WinVista and Win7 opens in a 'ready to snip' state. Currently on Windows 8 on my PC, when I open Snipping Tool I have to manually press 'new snip' before the program enters it's 'ready to snip' state. Can Anyone help?

Working with 32bit Windows 8 Pro. Taking the snippingtool.exe from a 64bit Win7 c:\windows\system32 obviously gave me the error message that the program couldn't run on my current OS/processor.

Taking the snippingtool.exe from a 32bit WinVista c:\windows\system32, taking ownership of the Win8 file and renaming it, and copying the WinVista file in it's place did not work. The program does not open when double-clicked, even when I try running it as an administrator and running the troubleshoot compatibility wizard on it as WinXP, WinVista or Win7.

Having to press 'new snip' after opening the Snipping Tool is completely redundant, because if I didn't want to make a new snip, why would I have opened the Snipping Tool? I need a way to fix this so that Snipping Tool acts the way it did in WinVista and Win7 on Win8.

If there was a fix for that issue, I think it would involve editing a registry key. Maybe Brink might come up with a solution for this as he has done for similar things in the past on Windows 7. Seems like Microsoft wants people to do things with more steps than needed .

I'm sure you are all aware that there is already a shortcut available to automatically use the Snipping Tool in the full-screen mode. However, if, by chance you are not, you can take a full-screen Snip by simply depressing the Windows Key + Print Screen key and your full-screen snip/view will automatically be snipped into a folder called Screenshots in your Pictures Directory. Note that your screen will dim momentarily during the snipping process. I apologize if this functionality is common knowledge but I do find some people that don't know about it from time to time.

Thanks guys for the extremely fast replies. I guess I'll lurk around this forum a bit longer!

@my2cents: Oh that shortcut is nifty, but I want to be able to immediately create a box to snip. Not sure how to explain in, the first post explains it better than I.

Let me ask you one question:
Suppose you want to snip a drop down menu, a context menu or the Start Screen as shown below. How would you go about to do this with the snipping tool if it is in "ready to snip" mode as in Windows 7/Vista ? How many steps would you have to do to accomplish this ?

    FYI, use:
    1. CTRL+PrintScreen => Put the tool in "ready to snip" mode
    2. ESC => Get out of capture mode.

Please refer to this thread for more info:

Forget the snipping tool. Try an old favourite of mine - Lightscreen.
I used it in windows 7, but I changed to the (costs!) snagit with windows 8 as it had more choices.

Now that you mention it topgun, I've definitely been in too many situations trying to capture an open menu with snipping tool but found myself using Control+PrtScr. Guess I overlooked the positives.

Does anyone know how to get a rectangular snip on the Metro side > e.g. Start Screen/All Apps/Store app? I remember seeing it in an unrelated thread where some members discussed and explained it, but darn if I can find it with advanced search. I'm "older" so I don't remember how to use it that way, if it's at all possible. I don't think it was with full screen capture via WinKey/PrintScreen combo then edit in Paint. I believe it was a rectangular snip one could take.
