Hi people! I've got a little problem.. I've changed the default icon for .pdf extension with another personal icon, and now I'd like to set it back to system's default Windows 8 PDF reader icon, but cannot find it. Help would be greatly appreciated :D ;)

You should have made a backup (reg file) first to revert but finding what the default means will also help.

If PDF is assigned to another program, the icon will also be changed.
To revert to default in this case:
Right click on pdf file: properties -> opens with... -> change: select reader from the list of known/recommended programs.

Going to Control Panel -> Default Programs will also allow you to set Reader to it's defaults so the pdf will be assigned (but this will also assign the oxps format in case it's not set yet)

thanx Hopachi! unfortunately my problem is not solved with neither of these solutions  I messed up this time :D actually the icon remains that of the unknown extension... no way I can find the path of the original icon, but still I can use the one provided by Adobe ;)

Yep, I did. Still without The icon. :) I tried that out after leaving .pdf extension empty (marked with system's unknown extension icon) in hope that it would be assigned but nothing happened. Registry settings are all fine, and probably system restore would make it look like before but there's too much things to take care of later on. I think that the icon can only be regenerated by Windows installation disk, which is not cost effective option to try out as it's easier to stick to an alternative. I don't have an idea on how to extract it out neither XD But thanks a lot for the advice ;)

Windows Reader has no .ico files.
Only .png files.

Here are all the red ones :

Hope they help. :)

Wow David you really did a great n extensive job instructing me  But I tried it unfortunately, and I tried nearly everything I found on the net. The last option was to post here looking for some last hope lol.
Nonetheless the path you showed me is quite a precious one,and I hoped that there finally is an .ico of what I look for somewhere around these folders.. But what I need is an icon that will change it's look from nice 256×256 to a compact clean looking 16×16 icon under 'list' or 'details' view assigned in folder options. You know what I mean... XD Yeah,I'm kind of a perfectionist with higher-than-basic understanding of computing but am stuck on finding that very icon...

The following is an icon resource file.
It contains 16x16,32x32,48x48,256x256 icons in true color & xp color.

View attachment READER_RESOURCE.zip

It is titled READER_RESOURCE.ico

It's contents:

EDIT--

An icon resource file is a SINGLE .ico file that contains various .ico files of different sizes & colors.
You know what I mean.
It will display nicely big or small as needed. :)
I made it with Microangelo Studio.
Nice icon program.

I am lost, I followed the shots and couldn't get to the WindowsApps folder then realized the it was hidden. Then things went downhill. Tried to open this hidden folder and got the you don't have permission window, so I click continue, then I get a window I haven't seen before in my life. I want to know how you flow over these without a single pop up window.

Ok never mind after looking I am an admin. I did notice though that you aren't using a MS account and I am, that would seem to be the problem.

I am using a Microsoft account.
The tiny dot in the Standard type is there automatically because I chose the Administrator type.

EDIT--

Standard & Administrator are not the same as Local & Microsoft.

I have always had a Hotmail address so I thought that a MS account meant just that, not a gmail account.
