Hey guys. There is an interesting problem in Windows 8.

When I changed my wallpaper with a full hd resolution wallpaper like this

This original one a part of wallpaper. ( Just sample for quality )

when I select my wallpaper in customization, reducing resolution quality. You can see it down.

What is the reason for this? All drivers ok. And I done a clean re-install.
Original Windows 8.

But I can't understand.

Is that normal thing for Win8?

Aaand just solved.

When I tried a JPG Wallpaper it's quailty has dropped.

But when tried a PNG or BMP etc. doesn't.

Is the Windows developers know about that?

Welcome the forums.
Use PNG for large ones, BMP gets too big.

Now that you mention this, it is an issue we've seen in the past but happens only on Win8.
It's something about JPG, maybe it gets transcoded to a very low quality: the wallpaper also gets resized to a smaller scale.

Thread about the same issue:

No drivers, no programs to blame, it's only happening on Win8 and I don't think it's fixed yet.
We'll see what 8.1 brings.

I noticed this as well. Which is weird, considering it was opposite in Windows 7.

Windows 7 behavior: Use JPG? It kept quality of JPG and used it. Use PNG/BMP? Turns it into JPG and makes it look hideous. So clear winner format for wallpaper was JPG set at 100% quality (or 12 if saving in photoshop).
Windows 8 behavior: Use JPG? It resamples it to a lower quality JPG for no damn reason! Use PNG/BMP? Keeps it perfect looking. So clear winner format for wallpaper is PNG. No point in BMP when PNG filesize is much smaller while still lossless.

I'm scratching my head at why MS even thinks they have to modify our wallpapers to begin with. Just use the original image as we intended, regardless of the format!
