Connect 2 external monitors to a laptop

I'm new here, so I hope I put this thread in the correct location. I've been having an issue with my computer when I try to connect 2 external monitors to it; one via HDMI, and one via VGA. The ports are right next to each other on my laptop, so I ended up cutting the blue plastic protection layer so I could fit in it. Anyway, I can connect both monitors fine, but I can't seem to get the laptop monitor to stay on and working when I extend the displays. In other words, I have the laptop monitor and 2 external monitors which I'm trying to connect, and the laptop monitor doesn't connect when I connect the other two. When I push the windows key+p, I click on the extend option, but the laptop monitor doesn't extend, it only extends on the two externals. Now, I'm wondering if my graphics card only supports two monitors being on at a time, or if it's some random Windows 8 problem. I haven't thoroughly gone through some of

Here are some specs of my computer and monitors so you can get the picture.

    HP ENVY dv6
CPU: Intel Core i5-3210, 2.50 GHz
    RAM: 8 GB
    OS: Windows 8, 64-bit
Graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 4000

ViewSonic VX2253 Series, 32 inch monitor
    Westinghouse L2220HW, 32 inch monitor

I appreciate any help given in advance.

You answered your own question. Common Mobile graphic cards only support 2 displays any given time, be it internal+external or external+external.

Common low to mid-high NV or AMD cards do the same.

Only the new Haswell will support 3 monitors in the case of Intel.

EDIT: You could also try a USB to VGA adapter for the 3rd monitor.

    2 monitors on laptop

At the moment there is only one way to give multi display possibilities to a laptop using 2 or more external monitors and that's using the Matrox duel head or triple head to go adaptors
