Where are the metro desktop icons/apps stored? I want to group them, instead of the present very poor arrangement of showing every single app separately.

2 possible locations, you'll need to muck around.

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\TileCache------.dat

and

C:\ProgramData\Start Menu\Programs

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, if you are correct on the first link, it looks like it would need some hex work, which I want to avoid. The second link (which would be "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu", by the way) is not really what I am seeking. That leads into the "non" metro start menu, as in previous OSs

Well, if you just want to regroup them, you can just drag them around to regroup. Second, you can make the larger ones smaller by right clicking on them and choosing the option at the bottom. Also, the no. of tile rows depends on the monitor resolution, you can change that and get more flexibility- explained here:

Increase Number Of App Tile Rows In Windows 8 Start Menu

I didn't mean to say group. What I want to do is put items from the same program into a folder. At the moment I have 105 separate items on the desktop. This is dumb by any standard. In Windows 7 (or legacy) I have 10 folders, with folders within. As these folders are simply marked, it need two clicks to get to the one I want. lol It would probably take this old grey matter several weeks to know how far to scroll and look for the item on Windows 8.

True, there doesn't seem to be any way to add folders to the metro start menu yet. If you aren't hung up on metro, just disable it and switch to the win7 style desktop gui.

Did that already Bill. Agasin, disappointment. Ended up with my usual desktop, just like Windows 7 but minus a couple of things and plus nothing extra. Looks like this dissatisfied customer will have to wait for the BEta (hopefully)
