Just Another Aero Glass Tool

Ladies and gentlemen,
let me introduce you the first beta version of Aero Glass utility for Windows 8.

What's new:
* old DWM loader is not supported anymore (because it was the main reason of black screens etc.)
--> AppInit_DLLs approach is supported only
--> installer will be available with final release, now only manual script available
--> registry script is attached in the archive but you must manually edit the file to point to the location where you extract DLL file
--> the glass will automatically load at Windows startup
--> if your computer won't boot up for some reason (glass failure), hold CTRL key during DWM loading and no procedure will be installed into memory

* x86 version is available for download, however it has NOT been tested at all so it is not ensured it works
* change MIL message alpha opacity to 255 when current value is 254
--> this replaces old method of disabling layered windows blending and can be altered by HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\DWM:ModifyMILContentOpacity (DWORD values 0x0 / 0x1 (default))

* using D2D-like trick in D3D to avoid incorrectly blurred window edges
* fixed incorrect drawing of plain color surfaces resulting in completely transparent controls
* when using AppInit_Dlls, inject into explorer.exe to enable correct taskbar blurring
* fixed crash logs when using AppInit_Dlls
* increased blur radius in D3D mode
* RP-like computing of default inactive border color in D3D mode

* I know I said that I won't add this feature, but since it was easy as hell (just one-line code change), I added feature to have rounded window frames (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\DWM:RoundRectRadius (DWORD, Win8 = 0, Win7 = 12)). But I won't support/maintain it more if it does not work as someone expects... let's call it a small Easter egg

I'll try and report back !

This I think would be just fine to have Even though people are most likely going to be using the start screen a lot more than the desktop. But I still like the idea. It continues to give the people who are still going to use the desktop instead of the startup screen the option to still customize instead of all the focus of windows 8 being on the startup screen. Though I do think that the startup screen still needs a lot of focus and work.

It's all about freedom ! I use the Start Screen a lot, but still need the desktop for many tasks, and I like the ability to make it looks the way I want.

So how exactly do I install and use this Aero for Windows 8. Does this work without any side effects at all. I mean I see that you have wrote that it doesn't. but how long have you been using this Aero. Do you think there could still be problems that could be found.

Release 0.7

64-Bit is perfect. No side effects !

32-Bit generates a C++ Runtime Library Error at startup.

Install Notes:

1- Copy all files to c:\Windows\System32\DWMHook (or where you prefer)
2- Edit the REG file to match the location in step 1
3- Execute the modifyed REG file to merge it into registry
4- Restart explorer.exe or stop/start DWM process

Have fun !

:)

32-Bit generates a C++ Runtime Library Error at startup. Version 0.6 works fine !

Install Notes:

2- Edit the REG file to match the location in step 1
3- Execute the modifyed REG file to merge it into registry

I have windows 8 pro x64. I can not find DWMHook in System32. Also I do not quite get all the instructions. Where and what exactly in the registry am I supposed to edit and what and where am I supposed to do with it. I think I get the part about merging the registry file after editing it. Could you maybe put a little more attention to detail in explaining this process. I really would like to use this.

Thank you

It's very simple !

There's a file named LoadGlass__AppInit_DLLs.reg. Supposing that you extract the files in ..\System32\DWMHook\, you just need to edit it like this...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"LoadAppInit_DLLs"=dword:00000001
"AppInit_DLLs"="C:\\Windows\\System32\\DWMHook\DWMGlass.dll"
"RequireSignedAppInit_DLLs"=dword:00000000

>> Run the file.

>> Restart.

:)

I have to say, the Aero hack on Windows 8 results in a very clean looking glass, I'd prefer it to be more like the Taskbar's transparency than anything. But again, it becomes chrome over content, versus content over chrome; this is basically not metro design.

Hi Coke,

Isn't that basically the reason for using a skin pack to get away from the original GUI; at least it is for me (Mac OS X 10.8.3).

Very nice.

It seems they release fast newer versions.

Here is 0.6 on VMWare Player Win8 VM:

Before:
01.png

After:
003-color.png

It seems I get some artifacts on 0.6 but this is a VM... so I'll see 0.7 next time.
VM tools are updated (the update hangs if ran after the dwm patch).

The transparency level cannot be changed so depending on theme and color it might be visible or not.

Slightly visible:
002.png

Tested on aero-rp as well:
002rp.png
That reminds me of a nice theme.

It even works on AeroLite:
004-lite.png

To remove the effect, I've figured it out like this:
remove.png
Edit the registry file like this, with - to remove the entry's, restart.

Why I run it in VM:
It's still early in development, some memory leaks are possible. As I said, VMware Tools graphic driver install hangs for a long time (keep this in mind for NVidia or ATI driver updates as well) and the dll gets injected into dwm... I don't have issues but keep an eye on those early versions because they might affect stability.

Now to see 0.7 since I was using an older version...

Cheers
Hopachi

    That's basically it.
Version 0.7 has no more artifacts and it looks better.

I've used the transparency-tool and it is very nice but thin as air... no border in the original Windows theme.

AeroLite

I like it.
Personally the last two screenshots go better since they have a border... for those who hate borders look above at first one.

Resumed, this seems to be the solution for those who like Win8 but want transparency back.

Very nice.

It seems they release fast newer versions.

Here is 0.6 on VMWare Player Win8 VM:

Before:

After:

It seems I get some artifacts on 0.6 but this is a VM... so I'll see 0.7 next time.
VM tools are updated (the update hangs if ran after the dwm patch).

The transparency level cannot be changed so depending on theme and color it might be visible or not.

Slightly visible:

Tested on aero-rp as well:
View attachment 19479
That reminds me of a nice theme.

It even works on AeroLite:
View attachment 19480

To remove the effect, I've figured it out like this:
View attachment 19481
Edit the registry file like this, with - to remove the entry's, restart.

Why I run it in VM:
It's still early in development, some memory leaks are possible. As I said, VMware Tools graphic driver install hangs for a long time (keep this in mind for NVidia or ATI driver updates as well) and the dll gets injected into dwm... I don't have issues but keep an eye on those early versions because they might affect stability.

Now to see 0.7 since I was using an older version...

Cheers
Hopachi

Dont get it so hard man !

the dll gets injected into dwm

Not in version 0.7, it's just a procedure hook. :)
