File metadata for documents

I am running Windows 8 64-bit. I use explorer to navigate and view my documents. The files are generally .PDF, .DOC and .PPT files.

I have added columns at the top to show metadata for values that I want. These include "title", "year", "authors" and "copyright". However, I am at a loss as how to edit this metadata! All the fields are currently blank.

If I right-click on a file (e.g. a PDF), go to "properties", then click the "details" tab, I get a short list of irrelevant metadata that is non-editable. The metadata here includes name, type, folder path, size, date created, date modified, attributes, owner and computer. I cannot find a way to get this list to show the metadata that I want to edit.

Any help appreciated!!

Those tabs are reserved only for specific file types predefined by Microsoft.
Thus tab "Year" will be active only for media files like mp3.
Word documents might have "Title" and "Authors" tabs filled.
PDF files will have no extra tabs activated. And there is no way to force or edit it. Only metadata showed in Details tab can be seen in these extra columns.
