So I was tired of waiting for MS reps to email me my Windows Media Center code so I brought my media player back to life.

I'm aware of the update, but my friends laptop with W8 couldn't play mp4 and other formats, (after the window media player update) I used my patch method and it works just fine now.

What patch?

Normally mp4 is supported fine.

    That's basically it.
Well it's not really a patch, before the update for windows media player was released I copied the Windows Media Player files from a W7 computer and merged them with the Windows media player folder on W8 and my media player worked like a champ. On my friends laptop we tried playing a xvid file and no luck. So I merged the folders on his computer with the W7 media player files, clicked play on the xvid file, it said MP4 this time and played.

The laptop fix was done this past Thursday.

Hmmmm... I did something similar with Movie Maker form Vista to 8.

Sounds risky just because the files will probably get replaced back with a newer update or corruption can evolve when installing newer updates, but let's hope it's not the case.

Something else: do you also have DVD playback with the "patched" WMP because the official one in Win8 doesn't.
Thanks.

Currently no, that entails edititng the registry so I'm doing that slowly, its to the point if its a dvd media player will open it but not play. Yeah at first I thought that was causing my bluescreens, but it was Avast Security, changed security and now no more bluescreens.
My schedules kind of busy right now it'll be a couple of days before I can get it completely worked out.

get VLC ! or just use codec , Codec still works for Windows8

I already got VLC and works very well. My WMP is not modified, I just have a rare crippled sound problem with it.
For the rest, all good.
