Multiple Windows help?

I've been trying to adjust and adapt to the new OS and its just been a challenge. Up until now, inconvenient, but manageable. BUT I now have a problem and I can't figure out how to get around it. I need to be able to have multiple windows/apps open at once and they need to be bigger than the thumbnails that the snap bar allows. For example I need to be able to have a word document open and a web browser/ multiple web browsers open so I can see them all equally. The snap bar allows for a 75/25 ish ratio but I need multiple apps FULLY open. It makes everything I need to do nearly impossible. So far the only solution I've found is to get a second screen? I'm on a laptop 95% of the time not in a permanent setup so thats not feasible. Please, if anyone knows what I'm missing or how to adjust this so I can work from the desktop like before, I would be eternally grateful.

Sounds like you are working in Metro. Use the desktop.

I open the Desktop app and can use Microsoft programs and windows explorer but even trying to use shortcut for any of the web browsers opens another app in a separate screen - no minimize or close buttons to modify the size of the window. Is there another way to use the desktop traditionally?

From what I understand there are two Internet Explorer apps. One for metro (full screen) and one for the Desktop. The version for Metro has no X to close it. IE for the desktop has the X to close and you can resize the app window. Like I said I thought there was two IE apps. I only see the Desktop version.

On the start screen there should be a tile called Desktop. Click that to get to the desktop.

Okay - so when I search for a web browser app and use it- the desktop version opens (with the ability to minimize/change window size etc) but if I try to load it directly from my start screen it opens the metro version? I am assuming this is all me just not understanding something, but I can make this work so THANK YOU!!!!
