Where I'm very confused.. I have both 32 bit and 64 bit on it. ( I E Explorer..came with those installed )
I have IE 9 thanks ( I guess to an update ).
I've never seen so many prograns and stuff on anything in my life.

I've been trying to install things I know I need on this LT.. such as Adobe flash... it's other programs..
My preferences are to use IE 8.. I'm used to it. ( on XP ) I'm not so sure about downloading these things on the 64 bit of IE.. I know nothing about 64 bit except it is supposed to be the next generation of the internet..( Feel free to just laugh with me,) if you like as long as you help me with these things.

Question: How can I know if I have both in use.. along with both versions that will be using the same programs ?.. or do I have to install both ?...I for 32 bit ..OR... 1 for 64 bit ?
Am I worrying for no reason ?

Should I go to W7Form with this problem ?

Thanks for helping.

NOTE : below

I've had to use the laptop recently..( as my old XP monitor won't show or connect to it...when booting up.. I know XP is fully loaded..I hear it when that's happening ( familiar sounds)

Lady,

Consider this. Install stuff on your machine as you discover the need for it. It's already loaded with Win7, just use the thing. As you find that you're missing things stop then and install them. Don't try to figure it all out ahead of time. A new system generally has a "settling in" period as you tweak it to your liking.

M'Lady; If I remember correctly, your laptop has Windows 7 64 bit installed. There is no reason for anyone to laugh at a question as to just what 64 bits is or means. A simple explanation is that this number (the number of bits) denotes how many bits of data the "Processor" is capable of processing each time it cycles. So obviously, processing 64 bits of data each cycle means twice the data gets processed compared to 32 bits each cycle.

Now comes the software conundrum: which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

Software programs (including the OS as in Windows) must be written to use the 64 bit advantage. But the computer hardware must be able to process the 64 bit software before anyone goes to the trouble to write the software. Microsoft's solution was to create a 64 bit Windows OS that would also run 32 bit software. Over time, more programs are written to make use of the 64 bit technology.

Adobe "Flash" was not in any hurry to write a 64 bit capable "Flash". So if you wanted to use "Flash" when you visited those web sites dependent on "Flash", you had no other choice than to use the 32 bit version of your web browser (in your case IE). And yes, this kind of software requires updates specific to 32 bit or 64 bit. The 32 bit version of IE needs 32 bit updates, as the 64 bit IE requires 64 bit updates.

Usually, you can tell from the Start Menu which version of IE will start because the 64 bit version says it is the 64 bit version. Also, you can look under the little round "gear" icon in the upper right hand corner of IE9, then to "About IE" because the 64 bit version will say 64 bit.

In your situation, I don't really think you would notice any performance improvement between 32 and 64 bit IE. I just imagine 32 bit IE will do what you want. And yes, you are smart to keep your browser and other software like Java and Flash up to date to keep safe!

Cheers M'Lady!

Robert hi.. I love your reply, just what I wanted and needed, coming from you . I'm glad you saw this post.
Thanks so very. I do use IE9 more than anything else on this laptop.. There are places where 9 won't accomodate my needs.. like Buzzen chat, I have to use my Chrome browser for that .

How should I stop some of the un-needed programs from running all the time ?, or is that really necessary with all I have and the speed etc ?

Thanks much my friend.

The first place I would look is in the "Startup" Folder. Click the "Start Button", then "All Programs", and scroll down to the "Startup" Folder. If there is a program there that you can start yourself only when you need it, just delete the "Shortcut". Also, if you have any program icons hidden on the taskbar (lower right corner of the screen), sometimes you can right click on these and tell the software you do not want it to startup anymore. One that comes to mind is a HP Printer Utility that runs all the time and checks for printer updates. Not really necessary, and you can have it check for updates the next time you print something that needs the utility.

There may be other programs using up valuable resources running in the background, but making those changes is more technical and knowledge of making changes in the "Registry" is needed. I just imagine you would be more comfortable with some local help with that. You can see just what programs are running (and do so safely) by starting the "Task Manager". Just right click in the middle of the "Taskbar" to open a small menu, and select the "Start Task Manager". You can click on the different tabs and look around without any worry about accidentally making any changes.

Cheers!

By default any program that launches IE will launch the 32 bit version. The only time you will be using the 64 bit version of IE will be if you launch it manually from the start menu. With IE open, If you go to Help > About Internet Explorer, it will show you if its the 32 bit or 64 bit version. The last time I checked there was no (easy) way to set the 64 bit version as default.
