Should I try out Android?

My phone is iPhone 3GS and as you guys know... it SUCKS (sooo slow). I used to believe that ios is much better that Android (I'm pretty sure it was), but I'm in doubt now.
Android seems to be pretty functional (even better than ios in some areas) and I'm really tired of jailbreaking.

How do you guys think? Is Android worth a try?

Most definitely. Anything's better than a iMe product. I have a Droid2 dual core with VZ service. Very stable and peppy even though it's an older phone.

Remember when at&t had exclusive on iPhone? Now they're shying on selling them and pushing more of Android. Why, you may ask? I have a nephew that's a higher up with at&t in the Twin Cities. He said that it cost them tons in service work and dropped calls with the iPhone. "Can we say antennae?" just to name one and a big one at that. Even though Apple finally admitted design fault after a not-so-honest hot fix, at&t costumers would blame it on the service end. There were other problems also.

My nephew had one, then he started buying his teenage sons Androids to experiment. All 4 in the family now use Androids of one make or another.

I myself am going to get a Windows phone on my next new-in-two in November. I just saw a new HTC. Forgot which model. It lQQked and handled sweet.

I've been happy with my Android phone. Unlike the iPhone, I get choice on size, physical keyboards, manufacturers, etc. iPhone is simply too limited for my tastes.

I'm in the same boat as jryoo. I have the iPhone 3GS and have been fighting off the urge to get the iPhone 4S. The problem is, I also bought an iPad 3 last spring w/ AT&T LTE. I can connect in marginal areas where my 3GS won't. So I can't just go out and buy the 4S. And I'm NOT an Apple fan boy. The main allure to get the next iPhone is my heavy investment in the App Store.

The other problem is I also had a bad experience w/ an Asus Transformer Android tablet. The device is too buggy. So that left a bad taste in my mouth over Android. Also Android's greatest strength is also its greatest curse. It is simply TOO open. I heard Leo LaPorte, the Tech Guy, says it is safer to get a Nexus Android device, as they are direct from Google. Yet his current favorite phone is the Samsung Galaxy S3.

If you do go for an Android phone, DO your homework and make sure you'll be happy with your choice. You are the one who will live with your choice...

I used to be semi-ios fanboy mainly because Android was crappy until recent.

The main allure to get the next iPhone is my heavy investment in the App Store.

I also invested something like $250 which is not a small money.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting Galaxy 3 or Galaxy Nexus.... unless iPhone 5 is super awesome and it's the greatest phone ever invented... Which is unlikely.

The power of greatness compels you, don't go android. It's a bad route. ios does suck and it sucks flying witch rat butts, but android sucks green, morbidly obese, sickly robot snot. As you are on a forum for the Windows 8 asking this, and I being known for supporting the metro design of Windows 8, I do suggest you try out the Windows Phone 7.

I shall extrapolate.

The Windows Phone is the ONLY phone that puts people first. Now, you're reading this thinking I'm delirious as the main thing you do on phones are talk and text. Ok, great. But, when the sole reason for buying a particular phone, let's use android in this situation, is about the apps, appage, amount of apps, apps that find apps, apps within apps, apps to make faces fat, apps to take decent high quality digital images and make them look a century old, apps to replace apps, apps to manage apps, apps to manage the handset, apps to kill apps, apps that are the centerpiece of the rare conversations with strangers, apps to show your friends what your niece looks like and even apps that attempt making human communication easier; this here is a problem. Your PHONE doesn't innately make things easier and doesn't have already built in items that with ios or android you need to download first. Take for example, facebook. What do you do when you get a new smartphone? Download the facebook app (or if you're an iphone user, statistics and apple tend to show ios users as twitter followers). Why? Because that's the ONLY way you can get to facebook and upload a picture of yourself in the mirror of a random restroom. You can use a bookmark on the home screen to the internet browser, but it's not the same. If I took your phone with said facebook (or twitter) app, I can uninstall it or even take off the bookmark you might had made on the home screen. Poof, your social network friends are gone from your phone. Now what? You now have a phone that talks and texts like EVERY phone this past decade, but you can't do
SOCIAL NETWORKING.

Then what's the point of if your phone can't handle the modern mode of communication in this day and age? Having two gigs of RAM, ports galore, quad core processors, and high def screens doesn't make putting people first a priority, now does it? No, it makes putting APPS first the first priority. It's strange how "smart" phones have turned out. It was once awesome to have the full on internet, music, video, camera, and other nicely designed features in your hand. Now, it's awesome to waste a perfectly good Sunday afternoon tweaking and customizing a user interface that honestly isn't looked at all the time because you're in some random app asking silly questions for two hours. Really?

Now enter Windows Phone. You probably haven't heard of it, but that's OK, you will soon and you will now. It's intrinsically, innately, and it's point of life is to put people first. I spoke about having to have apps to do anything and everything with your phone, well, with a Windows Phone, that doesn't happen as it already does that. Literally, within a couple minutes of having my Nokia Lumia 900 in my hands, I already had my email, calendar, contacts, and facebook already setup and I didn't even have to access the Marketplace or find an app or anything. It took two email addresses and two passwords to do that. Not only that, my Windows Phone integrates my facebook calendar events into my Calendar on it. I can go to Camera Mode, take a picture, flick back to it, share it to my facebook wall with a little comment and even people tag it as well and then already be back taking another picture. If I want apps, every app for Windows Phone has the same modern look and feel as my phone's user interface. Everything is silky (not buttery smooth like android as it's not fat) smooth and fast and doesn't need outrageous hardware to achieve it.

It's literally the greatest device ever. It's a phone, it acts like a phone should act in the age of social media and in the year 2012. It's different, it's gorgeous, it's fantastic!

Windows Phone | Cell Phones, Mobile Downloads, Mobile Apps, and More | Windows Phone 7 Here's the site where glory lies.

But if you might wait until the iphone 5 and it's taller screen and design and OS that has remained the same for about six years and the only thing great about it is the hype, or getting a galaxy that will probably be outdated soon as android requirements tend to be getting higher than previous versions, the Windows Phone 8 will match and exceed your expectations. Unlike android where it feels like what it shouldn't be, a PC replacement, a Windows Phone 8 will pair excellently with your Windows (preferably 8) PC. It's like having a companion for it. It doesn't strive to replace your PC, but isn't incapable. It will have the power you'd find in a high end android phone, but won't use that just to run the OS's user interface, but for things like HD video or DirectX gaming on the go or soon the fastest mobile web browser at launch this fall, Interwebster Explorer 10. :geek:

Simply put, try a Windows Phone!

Thanks for the big post.

1. I don't really do much of Social networking except for Google+ once a day. I don't really focus on that.
2. I never use calendar nor the facebook events. I've been using iPhone for a year, and I used calender app for like... 3 times ;)
3. Windows 8 integration sounds cool. Probably the main reason why people would select Windows Phone.
4. Apps apps apps. We use Voip app that doesn't have Windows Phone version. They say they're "planning" on making one, but I need that app every minute and I'll have no way of contacting others since we are most likely use chat room function. Also, I am Spotify premium user and Spotify for Windows Phone is very limited and buggy because noone uses it. Windows Phone severely lacks the amount and quality of Apps for the time being.
5. IE? I don't really prefer IE over chrome.

Windows Phone is probably not something I would try out right now. Remember the early Android days? I'll try Windows Phone 2 years later.

Just because you are on a Windows 8 forum, does not mean, or shouldn't mean that you must use Microsoft software across the board. While I want Windows 7 on my main gaming desktop computer, I certainly don't want it in other places.

But, when the sole reason for buying a particular phone, let's use android in this situation, is about the apps,
Maybe the apps are the sole reason for some people. Not for me. I value my physical slide out keyboard and battery life above an application.

Why is this, because the apps were pre-installed already for you on the phone? So, for the people who don't gaga over Facebook, they now have something that they must uninstall.

It's literally the greatest device ever. It's a phone, it acts like a phone should act in the age of social media and in the year 2012. It's different, it's gorgeous, it's fantastic!

I'm very glad you enjoy it. I know 2 people who use a Windows phone, and tons of people who use iPhones or Droids. Most seem rather happy with their smartphone. Guess it proves that we all have different wants, needs and desires.

DDDDD: I wish I had a 3GS (I'm on an iPhone 3g and a turtle walks faster than it can browse the web without tweaking it.)

I also wish I had an android, I feel selfish ._.
But android is very nice too. Its more open. No jail breaking/rooting required for many things. But if you do decide to root, I would suggest cyanogenmod. And then get setcpu to overclock/underclock to save battery or performance.

There are some jailbreak apps which you can install through cydia which can help speed up your device (alot!)
- Springtomize 2
- Multifl0w (in the settings make the activator a short press. Makes multitasking a lot easier)
- bitesms (better texting)
- datadeposit (so u dont lose ur saves)

If you feel that your home screen is laggy you can remove icon shadows (speeds it up alot)
You can also remove some launch daemons to speed up boot time.
Also in your settings disable spotlight searches (General -> Spotlight search -> uncheck everything)

EDIT Looking at this post made me look for phones.

Phone. Must have Phone. Me like iphone, but i want android. How about a Meizu MX?
Like a cross between a galaxy sII and an iphone 4 ._. I want.

Retina Display + 1.4ghz dual core with ANDROID.

Downside? Deal extreme takes about a month to arrive in the USA, sooo, ur gonna be waiting for a while.

I have a Galaxy SII and I think it is perfect. To me the size is perfect (4.2"), bigger I don't want and don't need. It is blazing fast for loading web pages on wifi and on 3G of course depends on the coverage. The size is so good that one of my main uses is to reed ebooks when I am waiting somewhere. Perfectly comfortable size. Takes great photos and videos, music sounds excellent, it is very fast with games, with Maps, HD movies, and compared to iPhone it is totally open and you can do anything that the market can offer.

In addition you can replace the battery. I always carry two more with me just in case, but only run out of battery once. It will last 6 hours in non-stop heavy use or one day for normal use.

I can also add more memory if I want. I now have 8 GB which come by default pus a microSD card of 16GB, so I have 24GB for a ridiculous amount of money (microSD 16GB cards cost 10€ now a days). Apple takes your blood for everything.

I paid 230€ for it free and second hand in perfect state, so I am absolutely happy with it.

You will miss the elegance of Apple in many ways, and surely some apps and features, but you will find many others too.

To me there is no doubt that Android is at the moment the best choice, always that the phone is powerful enough, meaning from 1Ghz processors and 1GB RAM. Don't buy less than that and don't overspend in too powerful ones, they are unncessary. Sony Ericsson's Xperias for instance (named Arc, Neo or Ray) have one only core and are excellent and very cheap at the moment.

You can install Chrome from app store, BrowserChooser from Bigboss repo so that chrome is your default browser, and buy nitrous so that Chrome will use Nitro engine.
Chrome is x10000 better.

Does it reach Apple's level? One of the reason why I have to use Apple is sound quality (via headphones). Does Samsung sound okay?

^ nothing wrong with those headphones. For portable headphones, they are actually pretty decent.

TOTALLY. They are best choice for $100 headphones. I used to think that iPhone bundle earphones were the best:cry:... until I bought this headphones.

I really really really want to buy the HD800 thing which cost something like $1500... the most expensive one Senheiser offers.

Spending that kind of money needs to come with a lot of research to find the best options. Unless you are doing audio professionally, I think the HD800's will likely be a waste of cash.

I highly recommend the Beyerdynamic DT770's (less than $200), for around the $150 mark the Audio-Technica ATH M50's are solid. In the $350 range the Denon AHD2000 get good reviews...as do the AKG 702's.

Headphones are very much a personal choice. I personally use Grado SR-125's myself and absolutely love their open air design. I made some pad covers to provide a bit more comfort and I listed mostly at work at low volumes so sound leakage is not a problem.

True. There's no way I can afford it either.

I'll defiantly try out your suggestions when this headphones break.
