Almost a year since ...

Had a nice run with Windows.
Like most here - been dabbling with Microsoft since DOS.

Windows 7 is / was great - I used to love Windows 95 / 98
Used NT4 for years.
Never had issues with 8 that others had.
Big fan of the start screen.

Windows 10 is what it is. Insider Previews build mania is what it is.
For this thread, I would say that I have had enough of ISO building and clean installations.

I made the break - just do not need a Microsoft operating system.
Installed Linux MATE 18.3 on my Alienware 17R3 - works great!
My Chromebook is still useful.

And changed teams to all iMac / Apple desktops.
Bought an iMac 27" all-in-one / fusion (hybrid) drive / Retina display @ 5k (5120x2880).

Never going back to Microsoft.

Not even in a virtual machine?

Are you able to do everything you need / want to do without ever going to Windows?

I'm getting there, but I'm not quite there yet.

Yep. I don't do much anyway.
Not going to do anything like bootcamp, because I have no use for Windows.
Very simple stuff like internet browsing - email - graphics - video / multimedia editing / conversions
System customizations - office work - streaming video - mapping / geography / statistical research

Not a fan of cloud activity or device synchronizations.

Been off of MS for a month and no withdrawal symptoms.

Anytime I can't do something in Linux, I usually put extra effort into figuring out how, rather than resorting to doing it in Windows. This approach has resulted in my figuring out how to do just about everything in Linux.

About the only time I run Windows is to install the current batch of Windows updates.

The main thing I just can't do in Linux that works very nicely in Windows is Microsoft Movie Maker. I haven't been able to find a good Linux replacement for Movie Maker.

I was surprised how Linux worked so well on my Alienware.
Used to be that, it was very difficult to get audio video working.

Now even though the Alienware has a creative sound blaster recon3d card,
Linux automatically downloaded what was necessary to play audio.

This particular lappy also has an Nvidia card - dual intel / Nvidia.
Checking the activity monitor shows everything is working.
I haven't seen any "event viewer" type issues.

Installed VLC of course, and that works too!
I am getting over using Windows media player classic.
Creating playlists instead of "play next in folder" is easy to do.

Of course Linux is free and there is no "evaluation / trial / preview" time limit.
No activation keys required.

As for movie maker - well - hesitate to say this -
in the Apple Store there are dozens of movie makers available if you don't mind paying for them.

I cannot speak to those that always seek free stuff.
The Microsoft Store probably has some but I cannot remember, never looked.
There are programs in Windows that I might miss like Paint Shop Pro,
I am getting used to living without them.

Would a product available in the Apple store work in Linux Mint?

Probably no way even to get there.
Linux is open source.
Apple is proprietary.

For the one or two that might read this post,
you might find this funny. :)

I struck out with imac. (do not have an iPhone)
Reformatted the fusion drive to the APFS system.
Guess what !! The Apple drive got broken.
Was going for a RESET of the OS and that failed.
Reformatted back to MAC Journal Extended and the system crashed.
The iMac 27" all-in-one cannot be opened.

Tried repairs using the "disk utility" but the "disk utility" said the drive was damaged.
Brought the device to an iMac repair shop.
The iMac repair shop's report was that the drive was unrepairable.
They told me it would need to be taken to another state for dispensation and replacement.

In 30 years, I never had this much trouble with a Microsoft device.
I quit. Sold the iMac to the repair shop.
Have returned to Windows :)
