There are lots of posts asking for help.

What is the root cause of the problems ?

The computer is at fault ?

The user has caused the problem ?

I say the user is the problem from Wikipedia:
Related terms such as PEBCAK (Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard), ID-10T error (idiot error), and other similar phrases are also used as slang in technical circles with derogatory meaning.[SUP][1][/SUP] This usage implies a lack of computer savvy, asserting that problems arising when using a device are the fault of the user. Critics of the term argue that the problems are caused instead by a device that doesn't take into account human limitations and is thus designed in a way that induces errors
Or as my computer teacher Mr. Cotton(the only teachers name I can recall these days) said to us when I was Junior in High School in 1982: "Sh*t in = Sh*t out"

The user is the problem. Constantly trying to perform useless tweaks or playing in the Registry not really knowing what they are doing. What bugs me more is buying a perfectly good Windows 8.1 computer and downgrading it to Windows 7 for which it it was not really designed for. The worst offender is not making any backups whether data or image.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.

I can see the user causing the problem when unsafe measures are instigated (Clicking on strange E Mails, d/l ing questionable files/programs)

Of course, when you get an update that causes problems (like the last couple months with MS updates), then anyone set to auto update is going to have a problem.

I am set to auto update, i have had no issues i can see, i do not think everyone will, i think can be related to individual systems, possibly due to settings, software, hardware on those particular ones.

I agree. I have dozens of test machines all set to auto update and never seem to encounter problems caused by MS updates.

Then again problems with the updates falls back on the User, for example:

November updates:
Reports posted on Avast's forums and on the official Microsoft Community page point to November 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 as the main source of the issue, and uninstalling this particular patch is pretty much the only way to deal with the issue.

Users whose computers were broken down by this update explain that, in most of the cases, their systems failed to boot or to install other fixes until Avast was completely uninstalled

Placing font in wrong location
Last August: MS14-045 applies to Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, plus Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003.
Specifically, Microsoft identified three known issues regarding the “behavior” it had seen when users installed the update. First, fonts that are installed in a location other than the default fonts directory (%windir%\fonts\) cannot be changed when they are loaded into any active session, essentially locking them in. Second, fonts don’t render correctly. The third issue is the most critical, however: Microsoft said that it is investigating reports that systems may crash with a “0x50 Stop error message” after the updates are installed.

Almost all the "issues" are one form of PEBKAC or another. If the thread has an exclamation mark, unjustified uppercase or the word "Help" in the title then it is definitely PEBKAC...

I would say both, but skewed towards the User in the majority of cases.

The user is the problem. Constantly trying to perform useless tweaks or playing in the Registry not really knowing what they are doing.

Not wanting to make this a gender issue at all, but I recently read a survey that suggested men are more likely to just dive in there without reading the instructions ;).

The worst offender is not making any backups whether data or image.

Where people ignore the guidance to make a backup, factory restore image etc. when getting a new machine, I agree that the User is at fault (though unless the non-savvy User happens to have a spare usb lying around I can understand why they might skip this step; forgetting about it completely is not understandable). I tried to get my friend to take a data backup and her question was "Why do I need that?". She did then appreciate the benefits but I know that unless I do a new backup for her, she doesn't bother. Then when she has a problem she'll be on the phone to me asking for help...

I say the user, the computer is a machine and can't do anything by itself it has to have human input. ;)

Try telling my husband that ;). He is forever telling me that "the laptop just decided to ....".
And to be honest, there have been times when something has glitched and it does not appear to be a direct and immediate consequence of a human action.

One of the worst forms of human input is due to impatience I think. When the machine doesn't immediately respond the User response is often to start clicking things or opening things, rather than waiting a while to see if it's just a question of lots of things happening at one time. If I had more patience I could have saved myself a fair few headaches over the years :D.

True mostly human error, except when piece of hardware goes bad on it's own, saying does go, nothing lasts forever.

Agreed, I don't believe I was responsible for my hard drive failing (but then again, maybe it was something I did???).

Another thing I've noticed on here is the number of people who don't really explain their problem very clearly (sometimes we non-techies don't know what is the important information to give, but often people don't even try to give a clear picture), don't bother filling in system specs (just putting it in a post, if that), and don't follow helpful suggestions and requests for more information or even respond to them (I've been guilty of this occasionally  but I hope I've learned my lesson).

I'm in awe of you people who patiently continue to offer help and advice, whatever the situation you're dealing with.
