Three Ivy Bridge systems coming together.

I just got done purchasing 3 Ivy Bridge chips. This is going to be one HELL'OF'A update, 3 complete IB systems, one for me and each of my sons (once in a lifetime update, never did three at once). Might as well throw in some 27 inch IPS monitors at the same time, new case with power supply, EVO coolers, a ASUS mobo to try out, 48GB of memory, headphones for everyone, and some bling lighted fans and a white LED strip for the window.
EDIT: The CPUs are starting to arrive! Two of them today, one more coming:

2012-04-30 IB purchases.jpg

Over a K of CPUs and the cost of mobos and coolers.

IMG_0873-large.jpg

3 Dell U2711 monitors, a really nice case, a ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe mobo, 3 new coolers, and my old computer, already 6 months obsolete.

IMG_0876-large.jpg

48GB of memory (heh, 48 K indeed) and a Sirius CM headset ( one of 4 that I own- THE BEST).

Now to squeeze in ANOTHER drive, SSD, for the SSD-Mechanical hard drive combo for the ASUS board

heh heh when it comes to "the best" I rely on AKG K701.

Yeah yeah, I know....I'm being an idiot....I don't mean nothing by it!

Honestly, I know how much fun it is to get new gear. Us guitarists call it "NGD" for new gear day.

Hope you and your family have a lot of fun with things there. Very cool!!!

Thank you, Sir! I am absolutely giddy with excitement! I have been drooling over the specs for months now and ordered up the gear with a thought "OH GOD, don't let them run out of stock before I can get the orders in!" Mind you, already having a Sandy Bridge CPU, I am going to notice NO DIFFERENCE whatsoever in having a Ivy Bridge installed, but I have a great home for my SB to give to my best friend. Then there is the thrill of a 1st boot with a new machine! This has to be, what, my 20th, 25th new mobo build over the years, starting with the 486 and a 12 inch monochrome monitor but I still get the willies.

True! I only wish I had a "NGD" coming but alas (yes lol) I must wait. Times are not the easiest here, but I have everything that money can not buy and that means more to me than anything.

That being said, it is REALLY cool how you are doing for the fam. Now that is something. :)

NGD!!!!!!!! :)

bump. Two of the CPU chips arrived today and I added the the pictures above. There is a lot of talk on the web about how the i7-3770K does not overclock well because of rapid heat buildup at higher frequencies and voltages. The boxes show a Thermal load of 95 Watts which is a lot higher than the original 77 Watt expected. Packed very tight and the is controversy about how the heat spreader on the top of the chip is held on only by thermal paste. Whatever, I don't o/c that high so no worries mate.
EDIT: Found out that the box reads 95W but AIDA says its 77W. They mark the BOX higher in order to prevent a mobo maker from skimping on the power to the CPU so that it will run IB but not SB.

Are you going to test the Intel HD4000 on chip graphics? I would be interested in how that works out.

Cripes, no one told me I had to have pictures! The other interesting thing is that this machine made me go back to Win7. The ASUS software that ran all of the great stuff of the new mobo would make Win8 do a hard (HARD) crash, no longer bootable and lots of errors. I am going to miss Win8, but not by much.
With a 27 inch monitor, I am not about to try the built in graphics, heh. I AM running Lucid VirtuMVP software tho that combines the two graphics cores...

Hmm, Ivy Bridge. Great chip just like its sister Sandy Bridge. NO DIFFERENCE at all as far as speed goes that I can tell. If you have a SB chip, stick with it. Otherwise check out the benchmarks here:
PassMark Software - CPU Benchmark Charts

My Passmark CPU benchmark is 12,763- not too shabby.

2012-05-07 Passmark Benchmark Ivy Bridge.jpg

The mobo is amazing, but it WILL NOT RUN under Win8 CP. See note above.

There is an all forums rule: No Pics, it never happened ;)

Great setup, thanks for the pics, it's making me want to scratch that itch...

Too bad the Asus apps caused Win8 to crash, actually most motherboard apps are known to cause crashes in a lot of systems, not just Win8. Have seen this many times.

If possible, I would find other apps to replace them. It's your preference, of coarse.

There are a lot of threads about the OC'ing heat from IB CPUs, was it noticeable on your board?

Heh, pics it is then. Unfortunately, there are three or 4 apps in the suite that I really need to have running so it has to stay. I also am running out of hard drives, 28 TB and I am running out! With another drive I could do a Win8 Boot on it and try different scenarios, dual boot would be disastrous if Win8 crashes bringing my boot drive down.
Since I use air cooling and a (relatively) conservative o/c THERE IS NO HEAT ISSUE WITH IB AT 4.5GHZ OR BELOW. Ivy Bridge is about the same in o/c as was my Sandy Bridge. Both heat up too much above 4.5GHz. I ran my SB at 4.3GHz and it would peak at 65 degrees C. IB at 4.53 hits 70 degrees C occasionally, but it is a higher overclock. I THINK all the fuss is about those guys that use water cooling to really crank up the clock. To add to this, the i7-3770K Ivy Bridge run substantially cooler at its default stock speed than Sandy Bridge.

With the latest ASUS Z77 mobos, they have some amazing stuff built in like SSD caching (IT WORKS! BOOTS FAST!), VirtuMVP (it works!), Auto-Tuning to check for highest, safe overclock, and a built in Wifi broadcaster. I won't sacrifice them for Win8. I will buy another hard drive ( to add the FOUR already in my system!) for booting to Win8.

Thanks for the info on IB OC'ing.
Have seen similar replies elsewhere, it has a bit of extra heat at the high end OCs.
Still planning on a IB upgrade later this year.
