I just ordered a 10 gallon (40 liter) wood (white oak) bourbon barrel from a distillery in New York and it arrived on Friday. Since this barrel was used once for bourbon, I'll be able to reuse it 3 times to age beer that I brew.
My buddy is coming over this Sunday and we'll each brew a 5 gallon oatmeal stout and ferment it for a week or so, then age it in the bourbon barrel for up to 3 more months before we put it into 2 5 gallon stainless steel kegs. This should be ready to drink at Christmas, so our family and friends will be happy!
The barrel was $145, including shipping and it will be used for the oatmeal stout, then a red ale or IPA, then we'll finish it with a Belgian Brown. So, being able to reuse the barrel three times to extract all of the bourbon/oak flavors from the wooden barrel should be a very good way to "recycle" the barrel!! I'll post some pics of the process...
