I just ordered a 10 gallon (40 liter) wood (white oak) bourbon barrel from a distillery in New York and it arrived on Friday. Since this barrel was used once for bourbon, I'll be able to reuse it 3 times to age beer that I brew.

My buddy is coming over this Sunday and we'll each brew a 5 gallon oatmeal stout and ferment it for a week or so, then age it in the bourbon barrel for up to 3 more months before we put it into 2 5 gallon stainless steel kegs. This should be ready to drink at Christmas, so our family and friends will be happy!

The barrel was $145, including shipping and it will be used for the oatmeal stout, then a red ale or IPA, then we'll finish it with a Belgian Brown. So, being able to reuse the barrel three times to extract all of the bourbon/oak flavors from the wooden barrel should be a very good way to "recycle" the barrel!! I'll post some pics of the process...

I removed the bung from the barrel last night and filled the barrel with water. It smelled wonderful and I'll keep the barrel filled until we're ready to put the beer into it for aging. We'll use the water from the barrel for brewing the next batch. I wanted to test the barrel for the ability to hold water without leaking and it passed with flying colors!

"oatmeal stout" now that sounds very interesting. Now, will that survive the journey from the states to the UK:D

To the kegs...

After aging a few months in the oak bourbon barrel, the beer will go into the stainless steel kegs for serving...

Strwth, that's one serious bit of kit. I can remember many moons ago making my own basic beer which consisted of packets of yeast and a plastic bin. The end results - nothing to shout about but worth the effort;) Strangely enough I always remember those times, living in a bedsit watching "Kids in the Hall" and trying to syphon beer out of a bin into bottles:D

We moved the 10 gallons of oatmeal stout out of the bourbon barrel into 2 5 gallon stainless steel kegs yesterday and it will "age" for a month or so to smooth out and we'll see if it's any good. The test taste was promising... We brewed an amber ale that will go into the bourbon barrel in a week or so, when it's done fermenting...

No, it's just a hobby but I've been brewing beer and mead for 20 years, so I know what I'm doing. There's always something new to learn and my family and friends seem to enjoy the product, so that makes me happy...
