Well newcomers do not really know, how the rep system works, so you can not blame them, but as you said, it is about helping not about getting rep, though I personally like achievements, like on steam, so I get you. It would be actually interesting, if it would be possible to mark a solution like the best answer by any user or a moderator, if it gets solved and put it on the top, bellow the question, so people could find it easier and that user might get the rep from the system automatically.

At least you got thanked, think of all the people here who help out and don't even get a thanks. They carry on helping because it's what makes them happy knowing that even if that one person doesn't thank them there could be several others who found the post helpful.
They'd still help here even if there was no rep system in place because it's a great forum for help.:)

I personally came and signed up with this forum to learn more and be able to help others. I might be wrong on some answers I may post and maybe right on some but that's where learning comes from. Me being new I don't know anything about rep or all those badges I see most have. I remember back in High school I took a bunch of computer classes. I really enjoyed working on computers and I do it on my side time off of work. My best learning was networking it was hard dealing with Linux Redhat servers and then I got in trouble changing IP Address on the network lol so then the Technology Coordinator wanted me to help him out. Then I had to learn about Novell Networking and being able to setup and deploy Novell to various computer's around the school district. Sorry I went off topic but as technology changes I gotta keep up and learn all over again.

Maybe there should be a sticky about "Rep_tiquette" :)

OK, let me be honest... I'm not a fan of the rep system... I post here both to help others (which I hope I do) and for others to be able to help me out sometimes when I'm stuck... which they do. And its very much appreciated. Thanks :)

I do endorse strollins comment that it is so frustrating, annoying and bad bannered when those posting requests for help never acknowledge any further posts and disappear without trace. That behaviour seems quite prevalent generally though, not just on here.

But repping... what are you supposed to do ? Its embarrassing to see "1 notification" or whatever when you log on and "somebody repped you" and I think why ??? I might only have made a passing comment. And what am I supposed to do ? pm them back and say thanks, acknowledge it in the thread... what ???

I quite like TairikuOkamis' idea of the system itself or moderators marking a post as an answer and basing any "rewards" on that.

An "opt out" button and some notice of the same to appear on the user profile would be one possible option too.

I support the view of Mooley and, in particular, Joan Archer.
For good or bad, I offer help when I can, or join in discussions where even a view may help.

I have no interest in merit systems, on this forum or others.
From the posts, it does seem that several are sensitive to feedback. Whether or not my answer helps (i try) or whether it is acknowledged, is of no concern. To contradict myself, do get a warm feeling when someone does thank me. The so-called medals are not important - unless their was some financial gain -lol.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have noticed what could be a flaw in the system. It is my own experience that, should I give someone the thumbs up, almost within the day the same person gives me one in return.

Yes, I have noticed that too, it looks like people feel obliged to thanks for the rep, it feels kind of strange receiving thank you for rep/thank you. I give rep for a good comment or for posting something interesting, I do not expect anything in return for doing it. Actually it makes me feel guilty not doing it myself.

On the other side of the coin...
Perhaps the rep/badge system is a source of confidence for the newcomer or visitor who may not have a clue about their issue or the responses they might receive.
I think it's a positive that way, after all, this forum does have a very good reputation! ;)

(One of the things that bother me most about searching for a fact based answer to my query, is the amount of BS I'll have to sift through in results!)

I'm here because I like helping people with their computers & I learn a lot here also. :)

When I first joined, getting a rep point made me feel good.
It made me feel like my being here was appreciated.

To me, getting a simple, "Thanks for helping me." is good.

In this life it is important to say, "Please" & "Thank you".

Please don't get me wrong, having badges, medals, and pips are prestigious, but that's really not where it's at. The good feeling of helping someone is where the essence of life is at, even if my suggestion wasn't the ultimate solution. It's a better feeling if it is, but if not, I'll learn which one was. It's a win win no matter what.

I figure those that thank or rep us is a plus. Those that don't answer might have gotten a solution via Bing, Google, or some other forum. Life gets busy sometimes and people just don't have time to answer back.

Lol! I probably have the worst points to post count in forum history, but I sure do enjoy this one and have a lot of fun. Hang in there, midou35000. The reps will come in due time. :)

My two cents:

If a member participates here or at any other forums for prestige, thumbs ups, reputation and shiny medals, he / she is in my opinion doing it for wrong reasons.

Nobody should feel obliged to give rep, nobody should request or even expect rep. Personally I have a habit to totally ignore those members, however sure I am that I could help, who post something like "If I helped you please rep me!" in their sigs. In my very sincere opinion all discussion about how get more rep and how to make OPs rep more should not be tolerated here.

Participating here should be based on genuine interest in computers, computing, Windows and such, not based on being able to show and brag about some rep points.

Kari
