Linux on an Acer Aspire One AOA150, recomondations?

I was given an Acer Aspire One AOA150. It originally came with Windows XP. I have Windows 7 on it now but its a little on the slow side. The hardware isn't the fastest, Intel atom Processor and 1.5 GB of RAM. I have no use for it and will likely give it away. Right now it is using my TechNet keys for the OS so I need to redo it. The original COA sticker is unreadable so there is no putting XP back on, not easily anyway. XP is unsupported anyway. I was thinking Linux might be the way to go but I have absolutely no experience with that OS. Or maybe Android if its doable. I'm just looking for something that is easy to install via USB, as it doesn't have an optical drive. And the least amount of fiddling to get all the hardware working. If detailed specs are needed I'll post what I can find out. Thanks.

I haven't run Linux in a while except on VMs. But this is a good resource:
DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

From my experience in the past I would say anything Debian based is likely to install easily and adding packages using apt-get is likely as easy as it gets. I have Mint 16 on VM. Unfortunately it seems Mint has since switched to being Ubuntu based. But I think any lightweight Debian based distro you should be OK. You can use Rufus to make a bootable USB from a Linux iso image.

The Mint 16 is a bit slow coming up in VM but actually runs pretty well considering it only has 2 GB ram allotment to work with. A bare metal install I think it would run fine. But there are tons of specialized distros to choose from these days.

I'm going to have a look at Ubuntu for netbooks. It will be tomorrow some time before I try anything. I was planning on using Rufus to make my thumb drive.

Please let me know how it goes. I haven't tried Ubuntu in some time. I've always held against it that it got the buzz when I felt Mandrake 9.1 already had the better Debian based single CD system at the time. But if it shines I guess I'll have to bury the hatchet.

It looks like they dropped the, netbook edition in the newer builds. I'll have to read up on it to sort it out. I only just started looking tonight. I just downloaded ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386 from CNet. They listed it as Ubuntu Netbook Edition. I'm going to call it a night and play with it tomorrow sometime.

Also there's a forum on DonationCoder with Linux users who have more recent experience than I. It could be worth a post:

There obviously are an array of choices, which makes it diffficult) but you may as well go with Lubuntu - it has LTS support and LXDE desktop environment.
A Pentium II or Celeron system with 128 MB of RAM is probably a bottom-line configuration
    ^^ LOL

BTW there are Debian flavours of Mint (LMDE), if you prefer rolling releases
    System requirements:

    • x86 processor (LMDE 64-bit requires a 64-bit processor. LMDE 32-bit supports all x86 processors, non-PAE included).
    • 1GB RAM

I went with Lubuntu. Install was easy and everything seems to work. I'll have to play with it a bit. I'm going to give it to a friend that needs a PC. It seems fast enough and I haven't had any problems finding stuff, so far. Thanks for the input guys it was appreciated. As far as I know she doesn't do much aside from Facebook and internet so this should do her.

What's the deal with doing a double click (double tap on touchpad) to open something? I have to triple tap and sometimes it opens minimized? I can't see any double click settings in mouse and keyboard?

EDIT: It looks like it isn't opened minimized it's just behind/under the window I'm in when I click it. The touchpad button works fine for a double click but taps aren't.
