It's weird, two taps does nothing regardless of how fast or slow I do it, but 3 taps opens the folder, picture etc? If I go to the pictures folder and double click a picture with the button it opens in the foreground and is viewable. If I triple click it, it opens in the background and I have click it in the tray to see it. I may be trying another distro or going back to windows. I have no idea where the settings for this are or if they even exist. That last comment isn't a complaint, just an acknowledgement of my inexperience with this OS.

You may want to try Mint. Supposedly it's one of the easiest distros for Windows users. I'm running Mint16 Cinnamon(which is Debian based) in a VM. There's a system settings folder that makes mos things straightforward. I just tried the touchpad in the file manager. It seemed to act normally.

I found a setting to switch it to one click to select so its usable for now. I'll play around with it again tomorrow. I'm going to chill out for tonight and just relax a bit.

Can confirm that definitely is a specific issue related to a lack of touch pad support in that OS. Actually it's quite stripped of many common functionalities ... it may not be the optimal choice for that machine TBH.

I also tried Zorin in a VM with 1.5 GB RAM, seems to be responsive enough for a full featured OS - chose it 'cos it's Windowsy and quite appealing in terms of the clean look and feel.

    Hi there

An easy one and very stable is OPENSUSE 13.1. Download the KDE LIVE disto and install that -- works brilliantly. Add the Pacman repository for all the multi-media additions. It has worked for me straight out of the box.

I actually have made a PORTABLE Windows system by running the Linux system from an external HDD and booting up a Windows VM -- extremely effective and an excellent portable system. Runs ENTIRELY from an external HDD. !!!

How to make Portable Windows system (any version)

    Cheers

IIRC, the settings menu has a mouse control panel, and on the second tab, there are options for recognising touchpad taps as clicks.

Another resource-light, simple and fairly intuitive distro is Puppy Linux, Puppy Linux Community Home - Getting Started with much more content on the desktop to get you started. It can be tried from a live CD or USB stick. For a review: Puppy Linux 5 Lucid Puppy - Nothing but praise

I traded the Netbook for an Android tablet. My brother in law wanted it for his daughter. He's happy and I'm happy. The netbook has Windows 7 on it now. The netbook was given to me, so it was a free be. That's why I was giving it away. Getting the Android tablet to play with is just a bonus. Thanks anyway guys for trying to help this Windows guy sort out Linux. I may be back again for similar help. I have a Raspberry Pi B+ coming in a couple of days. Another new toy to play with. I'll probably just load NOOB on a flash drive for that though, and start there.

If you right click the window bar it says something about show above/behind another page I believe.I haven't worked with linux in a while but I was a big fan of ubuntu/xubuntu.

I was actually going to suggest installing KitKat Android on the laptop.Been playing around with 4.4 for a while now and I have to say I am liking it a fairly good bit. Even though mine has been ina virtualized setting it's still been doing wonders on a test system that only has like 2GB of memory.
