Jimbo's been a Naughty boy - speed awareness course !!

    Hi there.

I see I have a nice little letter sent by "Humberside Police" that I was doing 74 MPH (119 KM/hr in sensible units) on a totally empty road on a dual carriageway (Freeway / motorway standard) just before the Humber Bridge after a day out with some friends in Lincoln -- nice old city plus cathedral BTW - but not the best selection of pubs though.

So I've been offered a 95 GPB 4hr speed awareness course !!! or I can just pay 100 GBP and get 3 pts on a UK drivers license - I've got a load of other ones - Belgian, Dutch, Icelandic etc so I'm tempted just to forget the whole deal.

In most of mainland Europe 120 KPH is sensible safe and easy to use and I was only doing 119 kph !! -- sometimes in the UK it's not automatic to "Back convert" into MPH their speed limit is 70 mph / 112 kph -- in any case is about 7 kph over the speed limit (which on those sort of roads in those conditions is probably ridiculously low anyway) and was of NO danger to anyone.

Surely the police have better things to do than worry about this sort of stuff - worry about DANGEROUS drivers -- especially those using mobile phones !! rather than a few foreigners going a tiny fraction over the speed limit on a perfectly safe road.

Don't you hate jobsworths -- I might just go to the course to see the other drivers - might be an interesting 4 hrs !!!

UK must be Speed Camera capital of the universe though -- suppose it's an easy way of collecting revenue - especially from foreign drivers. !!

    Cheers
    jimbo

Surprised about that. I understand they normally don't bother if you are only a few per cent over.

Are you sure the limit wasn't 60mph on that road? Though it usually is 70 on dual carriageways, unless there are signs saying otherwise.

Maybe they are tightening up to get more money in.

You might have been caught by this:

It appears that some speed camera partnerships may be deliberately targeting single carriageway roads for enforcement where they have three or four traffic lanes, knowing that some drivers wrongly believe they are on a dual carriageway

That made me laugh! Partly since it's true...

Sounds a bit heavy to get pulled for doing 74MPH in a 70MPH zone. What did your speedometer say you were doing? If you were looking at your speedo (rather than GPS) it would probably have been reading higher than the 74MPH they clocked you at as vehicle manufacturers deliberately make their speedometers over-read to accommodate for slight deviations in manufacturing tolerances, tyre tread depth, legal issues, etc.

As SIW2 said, are you sure it was a 70 limit, not a 60? According to this article (which granted was from 2013), it sounds like they already allow just over 10% before doing anything, and from 10% plus 2MPH they start with the speed awareness courses rather than straight prosecution:

... Under the previous rules, drivers travelling at ten per cent over the speed limit, plus two to six miles per hour, were offered the course. This has now increased to those travelling at 10 per cent over the speed limit, plus two to nine miles per hour, meaning drivers can travel at speeds of up to 42mph in a 30mph zone without facing a fine and points.

... The new thresholds mean drivers travelling up to 53mph in a 40mph zone, 64mph in a 50mph area or 75 in a 60mph zone can be offered the course.
If it makes you feel better, it seems the Humberside deputy police and crime commissioner has been zapped for both speeding and using a mobile phone as well.

Just consider yourself blessed for even being able to drive! As a legally blind citizen of America it's one of many rights that are taken away from me.

    Sorry to hear this
It's all automated as far as I know, speed camera takes photo then you get a letter in the post about it

Was this on the A15 ?
Just wondering if speed limit had been decreased on the run up to the humber bridge due to wind, from what I can see they drop it down to 50 or 60 if windy

    Hi there

On the A15 coming off the M180 roundabout on to the A15 ==>Humber Bridge==Hull. I was on my way to the docks to get the Hull==>Rotterdam ferry (Europort) after having an enjoyable day in Lincoln with some friends. I was driving a BMW M5 with foreign (Iceland) plates but I have registered as a foreign driver when in the UK and have passed the UK driving test. I think the Police just want to catch BMW owners --Humberside police seem to have a special vengeance against BMW drivers. !! I think in Germany I would have got a ticket for going TOO SLOWLY on a similar type of road. !!

Anyway I'll be interested to see who else is on the course -- but 95 GBP -- I can think of a lot of better ways to spend 95 GBP. !!!

    Cheers

This reminds me of when I managed to get out of 4 points of my license by taking a plea bargain to attend Alive@25 course. The ticked I got was following too close (I rear ended someone at a traffic light).

I am sorry that your are disabled but driving is a privilege not a right. I am hanging onto my driving license by the skin of my teeth due to heart issues. Oh and Jimbo everyone has it in for beemer drivers as they are jealous of the nice car you have. You can even drive around in a 20 year old beemer and no one has any idea it is that old.
