unable to get newer Internet Explorer for my Vista machine

A few web sites have one of those idiotic popups that say my IE 9 is 'obsolete'... works fine elsewhere.

I went to download a newer version of Internet Explorer form microsoft.com... and their site said I had the newest browser for Vista.

Did I miss a meeting ? Are the newer versions of IE only workable on newer versions of Windows ?

Is there a way to get IE 10 from Microsoft ?

Thanks !

( No, I'm not upgrading the computer to Win 8.)

No , they stopped Vista being allowed to use IE 10 as it they said it would restrict what they were capable of letting it do by supporting the OS , the same way they stopped IE9 working on XP.

Internet Explorer 10 to Ignore Windows Vista

I would suggest you try an alternative browser like chrome for example

That's correct. IE9 was the last version available for Windows Vista. You can see which versions of Internet Explorer are available for what Operating Systems in the chart at the following link (For Vista it was IE7 - IE9). Makes you wonder what the last version of IE will be for Windows 7...

Alternatively, you could install a third-party browser instead.

Yep, as stated above IE9 is the last version of IE for Vista. Probably because Vista's mainstream support ended before IE10 was released. It's a shame really because Vista still remains one of my favourite OS's.

I tried Chrome, and hated it.

I use FF, but a few web sites I go to requires IE for some reason.

My new laptop is Win8.1, so I can use that one if I need to.

I liked Win 98SE... and somewhat liked XP, but nothing fter that.

Glad I'm not the only one that hates Chrome. LOL

Well, if you don't want to upgrade to Windows 8 (and you shouldn't if your computer is that old, running Windows Vista), upgrade to Windows 7.

Before you do, check your system manufacture's web site for the Windows 7 drivers. I suspect most, if not all are there. In fact, if you have a manufactured (Sony, Toshiba, HP, etc) system, their site should tell you if your particular model can be upgraded from Vista to 7.

Then buy an upgrade from Vista to 7. You can probably find an upgrade with all the service packs already in the upgrade, saving you a bunch of time.

Then, of course, you'll have to install all the system specific drivers (chipset, sound, video, network, etc, etc,).

But you'll get IE11 on Windows 7. IE 10 is a whole new animal from IE 9 and prior. In fact, it's more secure and faster than most of the other browsers.

This highlights my problem with M$. My Vista computer works great for the email, Campaign Cartographer, MMOs I do. So I don't see a need to upgrade it. I might move it to Linux in the future. The newest version of Firefox has no problem with my computer. I have FF on my Asus tablet, running ice cream sandwich.
