Godzilla is an excellent movie! I strongly recommend it, especially if you don't care for "monster movies". Lots of destruction but no gratuitous violence and no gore, just a very good story, pretty good characters and excitement. Humans were shown at their best, no pandemonium. I left the movie feeling exhilarated... My wife and I enjoyed the movie and we will recommend it to family and friends... Has anyone else seen it?

I did one of my final papers on Godzilla (for a writing class). Found out some interesting things. Example: The question everyone asks - why the guy in the rubber suit?

Stop motion was the latest rage at the time, but it was prohibitively expensive & time consuming. A guy in a suit was not only cheaper, but it gave the director more creative control over the scenes. The suit however, was heavy & hot inside. By the time the film was finished, the actor inside the suit had lost 20 lbs & had back problems.

I'm looking forward to seeing it (when it comes out on DVD).

I assume you mean Japan's original Godzilla (1955). It was good, but I prefer New York's pet monster, the "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" (1953). It was a mechanical dinosaur animated by Ray Harryhausen, in a Ray Bradbury story involving a German atomic energy scientist (representing Albert Einstein, perhaps?) who accidentally resurrects the beast with radiation, and finally kills it with more radiation. It wasn't as big or as destructive as Godzilla, but it was a little more believable. Godzilla acted like an EVIL thing, with a desire to destroy mankind. But Bradbury's "Beast" was just a big dumb animal that found himself thrust into the modern world and didn't know what to do, so you can feel sympathy for him.

We're not talking about Godzilla from 1955, we're talking about the new Godzilla movie that was just released. Godzilla (2014) - IMDb

Godzilla may have started out in the original movie wanting to destroy mankind but over the years morphed into a being that does more to protect mankind from other beasts rather than destroy it.

Yes, I believe in the 1960's--70's--80's period there was a whole series of "good guy" Japanese monsters that were very lovable, including Godzilla. Most of them I didn't see. But in the old days of fiction and fantasy, there was a "rule" -- rarely broken -- that if any being is mythical or supernatural or in any way different from "normal" creatures, that being is somehow "supposed to be evil," and if he's good, he's somehow "breaking the rules" by being good. Casper the Friendly Ghost was an "outrageous violation" of that rule, and as he gradually overcame the resistance and won the acceptance of the public, he paved the way for others, like the Japanese monsters, to follow -- just as Jackie Robinson paved the way for black baseball players.

OK, I'm pushing it! ;)

I saw that years ago, probably the original film, didn't know who made it. Of course you've also got the original King Kong movie. My hubby has a few DVD movies that are monster type but from years ago not the modern editions.

I think most of us knew it was the newer movie. Looking forward to seeing it. But I have a like for the older Godzilla flicks I grew up with. Yeah, they were corny, but amusing.

@Joan Archer - Yes, I have few Godzilla VS something DVD's from the 60's & 70's.

As I put in my report: "Once in a while, Godzilla returns to remind us it's not that easy to kill the King of the Monsters."
