It is really a matter of personal preference. On the desktops I prefer Windows 7 but on my tablet, 8.1 is great.

Compression. We have ntfs compression on 7, hardly anybody uses it, because we aren't trying to cram 7 onto a 16gb drive.

In my opinion, Windows 8 is far superior. Of course, this is only because of some of the minor improvements distributed among the system, and I have the Windows 7 "Aero" look going for me as well. If you want it, its available on Glass8. (I've used it for a month or so actually.)

Windows 8.1 Pro is better with virtualization (as it is built in to the system) and some other programs that some jobs might require sometime in the future. Remote desktop access is a plus, too.

I use 7 most of the time. Much easier to get stuff done, and it isn't laden with that annoying crapware.

I understand where you are coming from, the environment takes a lot from Windows Phone, but it isn't a 'crapware' filled OS, as you may be referring to the interface. Maybe some tweaks can be made such as reapplying Aero, as I wrote earlier on another topic, Aero8. Also you can download start menu replacements such as Start8.

I hope you find these useful. Windows 8.1 has lots to offer.
