French police move from Windows to Ubuntu Linux

There are many reasons to switch to a Linux desktop from Windows. Better security; not having to worry over possible built-in privacy leaks; and, last but never least, Linux is cheaper... a lot cheaper.

That's the big reason why the Gendarmerie, which with the Police Nationale, serves France as a national police force, has been slowly, but surely moving to a customized version of Ubuntu Linux, from Windows XP.

Actually, I do care what other countries do, don't think we are an island. That said, this is really no big deal.

Linux is actually pretty sweet. Problem is, at the consumer level it is still not very mature. It is more of a business OS.

When I say "consumer" I mean granny in the cabin and even many gamers.

    Hi there
nice to know then that next time I'm in France the Police will be too busy re-booting their computers to worry about actually doing sensible stuff like catching criminals. !!!

I'll bet the CRS (French Riot Police) don't bother with computers when they are out on the Streets beating the ***T out of everybody in sight. !!

    Cheers

Yeah, big customer moving from Windows XP to Linux. Surely they don't care.

But you're right. They don't have to. At least not just now. But their cash reserves won't last forever.
