Alright here's a good question, poll above, discuss below.

Are SSD drives worth it? I am thinking about them in my next build but I'm not going to invest if they aren't mastered enough for long term use.

Though I don't own one, from what I've heard they're well worth the money.

So let me add a twist I love my western digital drivess

So when do I draw the line between our standard hdd and the sleek new ssd.

Moreover, what is the suggested use for an ssd? Boot or storage?

One thing that is not worth the money is a revo hybrid drive (I got stung) the performance is just ok, but if you have a bsod or reset your system then prepare to wait 30 minutes for it to rebuild the drive before you can reboot (multiple bsods would be a nightmare)

They are exceptional for both, but they are expensive compared to Standard Drives so use them for Boot and have Larger Standard drive or drives for Storage.

Are those SSD / HDD combo drives? I've heard bad things about them.

Moreover, what is the suggested use for an ssd? Boot or storage?

They are exceptional for both, but they are expensive compared to Standard Drives so use them for Boot and have Larger Standard drive or drives for Storage.

I figured, when I owned a desktop I broke my stuff into groups, so like downloads got their own drive. Documents and pictures got their own, programs got their own and music was on the network.

Also what's with this rumor that they fail faster than traditional hard drives.
Moreover, with an HDD you have clicking or spinning noises to tell you the drive is running or failing which ever comes first.

How am I to know my SSD has power, and more so that its actually functioning.

Hdd only have clicking noises sometimes,it is quite normal for them to just quit without warning.
I think you will find that it's just a rumor that they fail sooner than HDD's.
You will know if it is functioning the same way as you would with a HDD.
Probably the easiest and best way to think of them is that they are Internal Thumb Drives.

ok kodi, let's look at these things.

Standard Hard Drive: Spin-up, lots of moving parts, More so with higher RPM drives there is noise, sometimes there is seeking noise, lots of heat too.

Solid State Drives: No spin up; should mean instant start, No moving parts; Longer life?, No operation noise?, heat?.

I make it known I am not disagreeing with anyone, I simply am looking at all angles before I jump on this object because of $ per GB.

Please, look at this from all angles as well, I have heard SSDs tend to use less power as well, I would love to be convinced in this technology!

A revo drive plugs in a PCIe 4x slot like a video card....supposed to be very fast, but is very very expensive, also has problems with booting in some systems...did not know about the rebuild time....but it not something OZC would advertise either:(

There is a combo SSD/hard drive that uses the SSD as a fast access for frequently used data.....

A SSD for the OS is a great thing. Must have is perhaps too strong, but if building a system, I'd skimp on something else to make the room for a SSD. A Guy

You'll get varied opinions. Intel, OCZ, Crucial, Kingston perhaps. You can compare performance, then ask for individual posters experience with your choice.

I have three OCZs and two Intels sizes 60GB to 90GB - the oldest is over 3 years old. They all work well. But I have also heard good things about the Crucials. Always check the user experience reports on Newegg. There is e.g. one OCZ model that is a real dog. Beware when one is extra cheap.

$370.oo Canadian, on a freinds pc
increased performance rating 5.3 to 7.6

made case to mount ssd drive behind front fan which directs forced air around the drive keeping it cool (i heard high heat shortens
life of drive)

I will buy one soon .ps don't defrag more than once a year(with proper tool)

OCZ Vertex 3's were the best SSD's around but they had been experiencing issues the last time I heard. The Crucial M4 is not only one of the cheapest SSD's but also one of the fastest. I've seen many good reviews and feedback about this particular series and would definitely recommend it.
