Wow, now that would be nice to have auto drive for cars, but I'm not sure that I would trust the first few generations of it.

Probably safer than some human drivers. Ubuntu is the os doing the job.

Google Street View driver makes case for robo-driven cars -- he hits two buses (and a truck)

    Dinged.

One day, Google Street View cars will all be self-driving. Then, every crash will be the fault of some human who doesn't work for Google.
For now, we have to put up with the idea that there's a human at the Street View wheel who might do what humans sometimes do.
One Street View driver in Bogor, Indonesia, seems to have struggled in traffic and caused a touch of mayhem.

I think it's only a matter of time before it becomes mainstream.

There's still a way to go yet though - there seems to be a reliance on super-accurate sat-nav, which is all very well until something changes in a road layout.

Also, there would need to be so many safety measures; it would get like an aircraft... (plus you'd have to switch your phone off during the journey. )

For redundant systems you may end up running the equivalent of both Windows and Ubuntu, and the car only works if they both agreed where they were going.

Even so, the first legal case when two driverless cars hit each other will still be a big money-spinner for the lawyers.

    .

    LOL.

It might start out on fork lift trucks and similar going to and from warehouses on the same industrial estates. Not much traffic there and consistent road layout.

Could end up like those flying car things in The Fifth Element.

I reckon it'll all have to wait until all major and minor roads are fitted with a set of guide transmitters hidden in the tarmac with sensors in the bottom of the cars that take data from information transmitting junction boxes hidden under the roads giving traffic , max speed, directional info etc before it goes mainstream....camera and GPS feedback is just too....imprecise

They already use' robot' trucks that move along between buildings in a lot of modern manufacturing plants

How Long Does it Take? in General Support
I shut my computer down at the end of the day. I switched to Windows 8 exactly 2 months ago. Still every night I go to the bottom left corner with my mouse to shut the thing down, only to find nothing there to do it. So, when you switched to Windows 8 how long did it take before you could...
