Found out today they have just received 20+ ipads and iPad minis for the second grade.

Also, talked to a friend in a city about 30 miles from us and they are giving ipads to all their second graders as well. These devices stay at the school.

What a massive waste of money....

I just never understood, what do 2nd graders need with an ipad, let alone in schools? Coloring? Fruit Ninja?

When I was in second grade, all we had markers and crayons.

It's for their technology related classes. They don't use the devices to play fruit Nina. My kids go to a charter school and they use computers for testing, even in kindergarten.

Do they still teach kids that 1+2=3 or the difference between there and their ?

I know they have not made a real attempt to teach students how to read a ruler since the early 70's.

As a supervisor, the first question asked of a potential employee when I was hiring people for installing fences, carpeting, household repairs & remodeling was "Do you know how to read a tape measure?"
"Yes but it's been awhile and you'll have to retrain me a little bit at first because I forgot most of it."
I remember it was 92 applications before we found a man who actually could read measurements including fractions. And the boss ate dinner on me at Red Lobster because I lost the bet.

I'm not against computers in the schools. I'm against letting kids using them in school without first learning their 3-R's (Reading, wRiting & aRithmetic) If these kids don't learn the 3-R's and their computer fails, what will they do? Common sense is much more usable when the brain has trained to solve problems (even complicated problems) without a computer.
